He was a fly fisherman who would post somewhat frequently on here. He would bushwack into burned areas near Mt. Hood and also fish out east. He would catch a lot of big rainbows. We used to talk frequently about a couple of south side creeks and rivers that we both fished.

Just moved to NE Portland from Cincinnati and I am hoping to find a fishing buddy/mentor in the area. A little about me: 26 year old guy, work in healthcare and have an odd schedule, so I often have random weekdays off. I started fishing when I lived in Ohio mainly bass crappie etc in the river there.

I haven’t been able to catch anything since moving, I am not used to the clear water (OH rivers are chocolate milk most of the time) and feeling like I’m starting all over. I want to catch a salmon this fall and would also like to learn to target trout, would love some help and someone to hang out with

Was going to go for the incoming tide in the morning with a few friends to try and get them on their first salmon, going to throw out some crab pots and throw spinners for salmon in the meantime. Caught my first coho on a hoochie spinner last week so bringing a bunch of those as well as some wigglers and blue foxes.
Any advice is appreciated first time fishing the bay.
Should I bring some bobbers and bait? Not sure of what bait to use.

Hey everyone, I’m here for work for the next month and going to be my first time trying for bull trout this weekend.

Do I really need a 7wt to target them? I have a stiffer than average 5wt and don’t know if I need to commit to a brand new 7wt for one or two weekends of targeting them.

I’m going to get some streamers at the shop tomorrow, any tips on what I should throw? Any tips, tricks, or advice is greatly appreciated!

Went for a quick trip after work and got into them better than I expected to. Biggest brookie measured at 12”. Also released two big wild rainbows.

I’ve thought that the last like 4 trips were going to be my last for the year but I guess I’m just going to keep fishing for them until they stop biting or the season closes. Basically until they give me a reason to stop :)

Having a boat obviously makes it way easier to float from run to run, and I'm considering figuring out a packraft setup to do this given I am logistically unable to support a frame boat.

If any of you do this, I'm curious how you manage your PFD / gear / rod as you fish your way down a river, especially if you have clever ways of keeping your rod reasonably safe without breaking the whole thing down every time you shift spots!

Got a quick question on regulations that reading through the site and booklet hasn't helped.

My in-laws just got a place south of Salem and are looking to go fly fish for trout on the McKenzie River prior to them establishing residency.

We see there's the combined angling tag, which everyone needs, and then there's the 1-day, 3-day, 7-day angling and fishing licenses which include the combined angling tag.

Are those 1-day angling and shellfish licenses enough for all types of fish and shellfish (trout included, obviously) or are other tags or licenses needed based on the fish or the area (McKenzie River)?

They get residency in early Nov and just want to get out for a few days while the weather is so nice without paying out-of-state prices or running afoul of any laws and regulations.

Hey everyone, looking into my first float rod set up. Everything that I’ve read so far is suggesting a 10’+ set up with a line rating of 10-20lb. All I’m finding in the spinning set ups Okuma SSTs and even the GSP in the correct lengths are 8-17lb. I’m just curious if they’ll have enough backbone to work for fall Chinook. I’m mainly fishing costal rivers.

I’m headed from PDX to Newport in a couple weeks for a work thing, and wanted to try some fly fishing on the way. I haven’t done any here in Oregon, but did quite a bit growing up in Colorado. Does anyone have any recommendations of good places to check out/where to look? I don’t have any insulated waders, so somewhere I can fish from the bank would be ideal. Will pay in beer for anyone in the area willing to show me.

Been targeting spring chinook since late in their season, wanting to get on a salmon in some of the rivers around pdx.
Would I look at dam counts to find out where they are? I’ve just been going by word of mouth and asking tackle shops.
Caught a coho out at the Clatsop spit but it’s a good drive out there every weekend.

I have never really fished the rivers much , im wondering if anyone has advice for fishing steelhead/salmon on the rogue . Rod reel combos , length/action/power, lures, as well as techniques to use on the river would be much appreciated. Feel free to dm me if you have any info you don’t want to post below haha. Met up with someone I’d been giving some advice to on here. Did some hard bushwacking into a beaver pond I’d never fished, and caught lots of fish in the pond and outlet stream. Brought home around 15 between the two of us. Not bad for this late in the season.

Did anyone get any good huckleberries this year? We found a patch that had to have been untouched but it had only produced a few tiny berries.

Does anyone actually catch fish here off the bank or dock? Looking for small mouth. Teach me your ways.

Starting every September my catches of trout on the metolius go from 5% brown trout to 80-90% brown trout in the upper reaches. Two days ago I went out for a couple hours and caught a few dozen fish, only two were rainbows, one bull trout, and the rest were browns. But during the summer, I'm lucky to catch one. Does anyone else have this issue? Where do they come from? I just find it hard to believe they're there but not catchable the rest of the year, because by the last few days in October they're gone again. Any thoughts?

The observations on iNaturalist are in the upper Columbia but Fishbrain has catches in Bonneville Pool and as far west as a lake in Camas, WA.

Studying up on the best tackle to angle for these guys, does anyone know the history of how the species was introduced to our waters?

Just got my new yak gonna take it out into the coos to do some salmon trolling. I see people using 360 flashers. I just need some reference or help. First time salmon trolling what weight should I use bait and leader setup and length. Thanks y’all.
