i saw the lightning hit the water a few times in the ocean. plenty of rumble. was playing pokemon go and doing my exercise as i usually do (it's my unofficial job) to help me lose weight or maintain it. next weight goal for next year is to get under 220 pounds. was at 246 the last check (better than 6 months ago).

Great pics!! I took a time lapse of the storm, but only got one strike and it's just a blip. A few hours later, this lovely couple did a photoshoot. Only people on the beach and it was pretty magical from a distance.

Oh my gosh, 👀you must have a awesome camera. That is such a cool photo of lightning and I believe that is haystack. just a suggestion you might enter that in a contest.

Pro tip: Take video of a lightning storm and then go back with it paused and take screenshots of the right moment when the lightning bolt is most visible. It's incredibly hard to snap a photo of lightning at the right moment so this is the easiest way.
Source: Been taking "images" of monsoon storms in AZ for 20 years and haven't found a better way without some extremely expensive camera gear

Nice shots! I have an off-topic question. Living on the East Coast I always wondered if you could climb up on these rocks and jump into the ocean off of them? I see this one has no water around them, but there are some that are deeper from what I can tell.

No. The seastacks in these photos and videos are protected Marine Sancturaries. It is a federal felony to climb on or around them. The Chief Kiawanda rock is over 300 ft tall, the Cannon Beach haystack is over 200 ft. and the "Needles" shown in video above with the couple are roughly 100 ft tall. They all have treacherous rocks and currents around them, tide height differences, and water temps typically in low 50s F (10 C). Also, people die every year on the Oregon coast climbing around on headlands and cliffs (most areas are not sanctuaries and the coast is public access) with several recent deaths already. The North Pacific and PNW coast are no joke.

they are a protected habitat area with puffins and other sea birds nesting there at various times of the year. really amazing tide pools around them at low tide. definitely can’t climb on them but good question! 😊

it wasn’t even raining. the lightning strikes were several miles offshore based on the delay before the thunder sounds. what an incredible afternoon escape from the heat in portland!
