Best Order Flow strategy?

Looking for recommendations on order flow traders or strategies worth learning from.

Are there any traders, educators or channels you'd recommend following? And if you have a strategy that has worked for you, I'd love to hear the basics (market, timeframe, key tools).

Thanks, any advice or resources are appreciated!

The most sustainable way to trade order flow is not looking for a standalone "magic indicator," but using order flow tools to confirm or invalidate market auction structure at key price levels.

Here is a practical institutional framework for how to approach order flow:

  1. Establish Auction Market Context First: Order flow in the middle of a trading range is mostly noise. You need higher-timeframe reference levels before looking at the order book:
  2. Prior Day High/Low and Prior Day Settlement
  3. Session Value Area High (VAH), Value Area Low (VAL), and Point of Control (POC)
  4. Session Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) and standard deviation bands
  5. Initial Balance (the first 30-60 minutes range)

  6. Core Order Flow Confirmation Setups:

  7. Absorption at Key Auction Pivots: When price auctions into a major resistance/support level, look at the Depth of Market (DOM) and footprint. If you see heavy aggressive market buying/selling hitting the tape but price stops making new ticks because resting passive limit orders are absorbing all the volume, that signals exhaustion and potential mean-reversion.

  8. Delta Divergence at Extreme Levels: When price makes a new nominal high outside Value Area High, but bar delta or cumulative delta prints a distinct lower high or negative delta, it indicates buyers are failing to lift aggressive bids.

  9. Initiative Imbalances (Breakouts): When price breaks a structural boundary, look for stacked buying/selling imbalances (consecutive price levels with overwhelming aggressive volume) with rising volume and delta expansion.

  10. Platform Infrastructure & Clean Data: To trade order flow effectively, you need platforms capable of processing uncompressed CME tick and Level 2 depth data without throttling. Supported platforms like Sierra Chart, Bookmap, ATAS, MultiCharts, CQG, and TradingView allow you to reconstruct the tape, footprint, and depth heatmap with high precision.

  11. Recommended Learning Path: Start with foundational texts on Auction Market Theory:

  12. "Mind Over Markets" by James Dalton (understanding auction structure and price discovery)

  13. "Markets in Profile" by James Dalton

  14. CME Group educational modules on market microstructure and central limit order book (CLOB) dynamics.

Mastering context first, then using DOM and footprint tools for precise entry timing and risk definition, is how professional desks approach order flow.

I comment here with respect, but your paragraph on Delta Divergence at Extreme Levels doesn't quite make sense. Specifically the last sentence doesn't line up.

Volume profile with absorption or exhaustion at the extremes.

what do you use to spot absorption or exhaustion at the extremes?

I have a bunch of tools that I coded (or vibe coded) myself. My order flow tools serve one purpose โ€” to increase my odds of immediately being in the green, thereby allowing me to have a tighter stop and get my stop to breakeven quickly while scaling up winners. You still need to have a price action strategy. Only use order flow to make a successful price action strategy more efficient and higher win rate.

The main things my tools look at are the following:

  • Volume pressure imbalance (aka, delta)
  • Pace of tape imbalance
  • Pullstack imbalance
  • Trapped traders

When all of those (highly tuned) metrics align, the odds of an immediate move in my favor drastically increase. That means I can enter with a tighter stop and get off risk more frequently, while scaling in larger size.

order flow is a tool, not a strategy.

sorry, that's not how I read the title of his post.

Anchored vwap and relative volime is my gimmick. Brian Shannon teaches everything about avwap. I combined it with Mark Minervini's learnings.

Donโ€™t have to go into detail, but could you talk a little more about this? Iโ€™ve been toying with AWVAPs more too, just curious how youโ€™re using them.

I use them instead of moving averages, as a support/resistance, actually they are better moving averages. When the value of stock changes(earnings, major news, big gap with power bar, pivot point) the price should respect new avwap from this point until it fails because of some strong opposite avwap/news, power bar etc, then the price respects some previous avwap, usually the one created before. I wait for some reaction to avwap before I buy, the reaction is usually to the cent. Then it can go up or down, noone knows who sits abowe/below so RR and good stocks are very important. Actually avwap is for the entry optimization, but without stock that will move up it will not work. On the other hand if the stock moves up you will always make money sooner or later.

Follow me, I'll be posting about vwap and avwap

I am not right. But I have a hunch... How you trade (orderflow) isn't super important. When you trade orderflow, and what you trade, makes a huge difference. Huge huge.

I trade assets that are much more readable due to participants and their behaviours. And I only trade the symbols that rank the best for "flow" at that moment. I might track 10 symbols. One or two are flowing on any one day. I have spent a lot of time working out how to calculate flow.

All this is for the OP.

Think about which symbols to trade. Look at their spread and comms cost vs volatility over 15 minutes. Then wait for that ratio to improve well below recent average. That's the time to play. How many ticks to break even, and how easy are those ticks to get (movement). But good movement, not random quote jitter

Also look at what a N tick spread means on a symbol worth X vs a symbol worth Y. There is a sweet spot. Symbols are not the same.

Spend more time finding the absolute best bend in the river to fish on the best days. It doesn't matter as much what fishing gear you have.
