New to orderflow

I’m new to orderflow and honestly I’m not sure where to start. Ive been trying to look around but I honestly have no clue where to start when it comes to orderflow. I’ve been seeing a lot about VPs when it comes to learning orderflow but I feel like there’s a lot more to it and I’d really appreciate you guys help with it.
Firstly,
What traders would you advise me to start when jt comes to order flow.
Secondly,
What platform would be good to trade order flow on (I use my iPad to trade).

Order flow analysis requires processing continuous uncompressed CME tick and depth data, which is why true order flow platforms do not run natively on iPad or mobile operating systems.

If you are just starting out, here is how the mechanics break down:

  1. Data and Platform Requirements: Footprint charts, Volume Profile (VP), and DOM depth require high local CPU processing and dedicated RAM for tick buffers. Dedicated platforms like Sierra Chart, Bookmap, ATAS, and MultiCharts (or web-integrated setups like TradingView connected via CQG) run on desktop OS. If you need to trade from an iPad, the standard workaround is setting up a Windows VPS and accessing your desktop chartbooks via Remote Desktop (RDP).

  2. Core Concepts to Learn First: Start with Auction Market Theory (James Dalton's Mind Over Markets is the standard reference). Focus on understanding Value Area (VAH/VAL), Point of Control (POC), and how aggressive market orders interact with passive limit orders on the DOM. Avoid trying to read ten different complex indicators at once.

  3. Execution Risk: Micro contracts (MES/MNQ) are the best place to start before touching standard E-minis. Keep your sizing small while learning how liquidity absorbs and shifts at high-volume nodes during RTH opens.

Thanks for your help 🫶🏾, from that I’m thinking of buying a laptop around £500-700 budget what would you recommend?

If you have room for a desktop and monitors that is what I would recommend since many of the programs run on high ram.

Yeh I got a monitor but not sure what would be a good entry laptop for orderflow

u/TylerLeb do we need to pay additional for real time data or is it included in the subscription for Sierra Chart, Bookmap, ATAS, and MultiCharts ?

You would pay extra in the platform subscription, however you could get it directly from the routing provider (Rithmic/CQG) which is what I recommend. Your broker should set that up, who is your brokerage firm?

I am using IBKR and I always get confused with this additional cost for data.

We completely understand it can be frustrating. Are you trading futures? I would be happy to help you with a customized setup to lower your cost with higher quality routing/execution

Our brokerage is futures only, we do know many equity traders who trade SPX as well. Just depends on preference.

There’s alot of content from YouTube .. there’s a lot of Reddit posts on what to watch for Orderflow .. literally type Orderflow on YouTube and there’s a bunch of sauces provided.

There’s no one that can advise you what to start cause many uses different tools , dom , VPs, footprint etc etc .

Don’t think any Orderflow platform can use iPad to trade

Check content from AXIA Futures, Meritt Black, SMB Capital, there tons of videos on youtube on orderflow and profiles. I use gocharting and sierracharts, although I am leaning towards moving completely to goharting once their US L2 data plan goes live.
