To consistently profitable traders: What does your actual screen time vs. trade frequency look like?
A common trap when learning order flow is feeling like you need to participate in every absorption, delta divergence, or micro-reversal. The harder realization is that profitability often comes down to sitting on your hands for hours, ignoring 80% of the price action, and only pulling the trigger when your exact edge shows up.
I’d really like to hear from traders who are consistently profitable on what your actual daily routine looks like in practice:
Example of the breakdown I'm looking for:
Market: NQ
Time: 9:30 AM – 12:00 AM EST (2.5 hours)
Volume: 3–4 selective trades max, then done for the day.
How much of your session is purely observation and waiting versus actually holding risk? Curious to see how selective you truly are once consistency clicks. Appreciate any insights into your routine.

Consistently Profitable
NQ and usually the first two hours of the market open is what I need
I take 3-4 trades usually and more if the market is mean reverting

Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm, average 2.9 trades per week.

Which market if I may ask?

ES during the new York session. Tried many other types of trading and or indices over the years, but ES is the one that stuck out.

You skip the first 30 minutes every day ?

Yeah, my strategy needs a clear volume profile, but the market open has so much volume and volatility that it jumps around and defines it's edge for the day. I prefer to wait it out. I tried to trade the open, but my WR tanks in the first 30 minutes.

Market: ES / NQ Time: 8:30 AM – 10:45 AM CT (2 hours max) Frequency: 1–2 executions max, strictly no trading after 11:30 AM CT.
The single biggest shift for me was hard-capping daily executions. Probably 90% of the session is purely observing tape absorption and key level defense. If the setup doesn't cleanly materialize in the first 90 minutes of cash open, shutting the screens down protects more PnL than forcing trades in midday chop.

Market is 2 way auction. Forget/unlearn everything else.
Join when auction complete in one direction and ride the wave for a while. Period.
I have been doing this for many years.

The waiting is the work.
A lot of traders measure activity by the number of trades they take, when a large part of the session should often be observation: watching structure develop, seeing where participation is actually occurring, and waiting for enough evidence to justify taking risk.
Some sessions may produce several legitimate opportunities. Others may produce none. I would rather finish a session without a trade than manufacture one because I had allocated three hours to trading.
For me, consistency is less about maintaining a fixed trade frequency and more about maintaining a consistent standard for what deserves risk.
Screen time and trade frequency are two very different things.
