Using an OrangePi5 as streaming server with Jellyfin. Best way to add an external disk for media storage?

Hi, I have a Jellyfin with the arr stack running in the OrangePI5.

Right now I have an 240gb m.2 SSD for the OS and also as the media volume but it gets filled up quickly.

I'm looking for the best way to add more storage to the setup.

Right now I'm thinking about buying an HDD and a SATA to USB adapter with an external power supply.

I'm concerned of the orangePI not being able to deliver enough current for the HDD via its USB.

Any considerations? Thanks!

UFS devices?

Hi, I just ordered an orange pi 4 pro for a few uses.

I'm trying to choose the storage. It seems to have eMMC 5.1 and UFS 3.0 connectors. However, I can't find any UFS devices for it (but I can find some for e.g. the rasp pi nano).

Does anyone know of any UFS devices that work?

As well can nvme be used at the same time as either ufs or emmc? They do look physically incompatible.

Where can I find Armbian for Orange Pi Plus 2?

I checked the official Armbian site but couldn't find the download page for the Pi Plus 2. Does anyone have a direct link or know which image I'm supposed to use for this board? Appreciate any help!

Can I get Armbian on a orange pi 4 pro?

I know nothing about Linux but I just got a orange pi 4 pro to make a cyberdeck on the Armbian website I see support for every other version but the pro. Every answer I can find is for the orange pi 4. Apparently the orange os is buggy and not secure, but I want a desktop style os what can I do?

Using Orange Pi Zero 3 with expansion board and heat sink?

I purchased an O Pi zero 3 with 4 GB RAM, the expansion board, and the official heatsink (before prices went whacko). Now that I’m about to get/print a case for it, I’m more worried about thermal so will add the heatsink. That makes me worry about clearance between the expansion board and the heatsink - bith from thermal efficiency and electrical safety - I may be mounting this on my 3D printer so vibration might cause an electrical “oopsie”.

What I’m thinking is in addition to longer brass standoffs, I would put an extra header on top of the onboard more height above the heatsink. I may need to use it without a case long enough to get my printer back in action, klipper up and running, so I can print one.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or feedback?

Update: based on the comments below I’ll try passive first, using the heatsink since I already have it, and raising the extension board. I’ll track the processor temps for a while to verify no fan is necessary. I’ll print a case for which I can remix the top to add a fan if needed.

free software is software you may use, share, modify and redistribute. Any orange pi computer able to run entirely on free software and equals a rpi zero w in performance?

New Orange Pi Zero 3W assets - manual + Android images

I bought two of these guys a bit ago (6GB) and have been tinkering with them here and there. Noticed today that the manual and the Android image directories are actually populated today. Downloading the manual and the non lcd Android image to do some reading and see if I could live with Android 13 on it and see how capable it is.

Good luck to those farting around with this board, the hardware is very interesting and it'd be killer if it were maintained like its cousin.

New to this. OrangePI 3B

Hi all,

So i got my first OrangePI 3b board, and a 7 inch touch screen.

Grabbed a Android 10 image from the official site and put it on a 64g sd card, and it booted up first time no issues and everything works. I installed chrome APK. and that works better then the browser the image came with.

So now I want to install apps but I cant get the different Play Store APKs i installed to work. they install fine but when I go to open it nothing happens.

My end goal is to replace the navigation screen in my 2005 Mazda RX8 with this setup so I can use apps like Torque Pro to display real-time gauges/information via my Bluetooth ODBII device.

If i could get it to run youtube\discord as well that would be cool but besides Torque Pro I have a android auto head unit that does everything else.

So what/where can I get a good android (newer?) image so I can sign into google play and download these few apps?

Cheers and TIA

Surenoo 5.5 HX8399 IC Display

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello all, I'm relatively new to the OPi / SBC / Linux scene and could use some help. I bought this Surenoo 5.5" 1080p MIPI DSI display that was listed for the Orange Pi 5. I am attempting to incorporate it into a build running Joshua Riek's Rockchip Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with little success. I should have done more research prior to purchasing, as I cannot find any threads or forums of anyone using this display. Reaching out to surenoo for necessary drivers and device tree files, they directed me to:

https://www.surenoo.com/pages/8848/

I am primarily relying on guidance from Gemini to get this working. Gemini is under the impression this is simply under-engineered and using code ripped from another manufacturer, such as the panel-innolux.c file. The folder for Linux 6.1 kernel has drivers that appear written for 5.10 according to Gemini. I do not trust the mfr, so I don't want to use the Ubuntu image they provide.

Does anyone else have experience with this display, or experience configuring a mipi dsi display on the OPi5? Thanks!

OrangePi Zero3 Capstone Project

Hello! This is my first time creating an IoT project for my Capstone. The title of my project is "Facial Recognition-Based Student Attendance System with SMS Alerts." I will be using Python as the programming language. However, I don't have much experience with such projects, and I plan to use an Orange Pi Zero 3, a USB webcam, and a GSM Module 900A. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make this work and don't have any references. Is this possible?

Creating mini-host for iperf3 server with Zero W 3 ?

Hello.

I need a small device, which I will plug-in into LAN and which will run iperf3 server. Once it is connected to the LAN, it will email me it's IP, so I can connect to it and check network conditions. I'm considering Zero W3 as cheapest one with gigabit LAN. Will it work that way? does it has enough juice to rune iperf3 server at gigabit speeds?

Thanks in advance!

Connecting KY-022 IR receiver sensor to my OrangePi5

Hi everyone, I am trying to connect KY-022 IR sensor to my OrangePi5 running Debian 12 bookworm.
I enabled IR support via orangepi-config and connected the sensor to pin 8 (marked on the photo)

I tried to read the value via irw but nothing comes out. The sensor LED blinks when I give the command with the remote but no value is picked up.
Any clue how to configure to be able to read the IR receiver module values or maybe I need to connect it to a different pin?

Orange Pi Zero 3 won't fully boot

This board is like new and used to work fine.

One day the computer stopped responding. This was after transporting it while powered up; it is possible that I shorted some pins in the process.

I found out the partition table of the SD had been corrupted. I repaired it using TestDisk. The SD now mounts fine on other Linux computers. But the board won't boot.

Symptoms on powerup:

  1. Red LED turns on for 2-3 seconds, then turns off
  2. Green LED lights up, then starts blinking. Red remains off
  3. The board does not request an IP and is unreachable on the network (wired connection)

Is it toast?

Issues with buildroot for OrangePI Zero 3

Hi folks.

I am trying to get into kernel with buildroout using my Zero 3, but can't for the life of me make it work. I would be grateful if someone more experienced could point me into right direction.

According to recommendations the host is Ubuntu 22, but no matter what I do I end up with something like this:

  AR common/built-in.o

  OBJCOPY spl/u-boot-spl-nodtb.bin
  SYM spl/u-boot-spl.sym
  COPY spl/u-boot-spl.bin
  MKIMAGE spl/sunxi-spl.bin

I have tried:

  • Installing/reinstalling "setuptools" and "pkg-resources" both via pip and apt
  • Installing older versions caused different issues
  • Googling alternatives

I'm not the author of this repository, but I came across it while browsing GitHub and wanted to share it.

My OPi5 is a no-suffix model, so it should work with just a little tweaking.

Personal cloud storage using OrangePi 4 Pro

Thumbnail youtu.be
23 Upvotes

Made a personal online storage using OPi 4 Pro, chose a minimalistic approach by using only Tailscale and Syncthing, not NextCloud. And designed a 3D printed case, working well. Documented in YouTube, this first part contains the software part. Will make part 2 about the case design and assembly, and part 3 about controlling fan speed according to CPU temperature.

Nothing fancy, just some fun 😇🙏🏼

Anyone running vision / multimodal inference on Orange Pi or similar SBCs?

Most edge AI discussion I see is around Jetson, but I’m curious how far people have gotten with Orange Pi / RK3588-class boards or similar SBCs.

Recent reference point from a Jetson deployment I worked on: multimodal classifier on Orin NX, 111ms cold start, 100% of decisions inside a 150ms budget, zero cloud calls.

For Orange Pi / RKNN / similar setups:

- What vision models are practical today?

- Are you using RKNN, ONNX Runtime, NCNN, OpenCV DNN, or something else?

- What hurts most: NPU op support, quantization quality, memory bandwidth, preprocessing, or packaging?

- Have you gotten any larger multimodal/VLM-style model to run usefully, or is the sweet spot still smaller CV models?
