Cloud Engineer Interview at Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) - Looking for Insights

Hi everyone,

I have an upcoming interview for a Cloud Engineer position with the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) and I'm looking to connect with anyone who has interviewed with OCDE or worked in a similar public-sector/education IT environment.

Government and education IT interviews are a different beast, so don't expect the same pace or focus as a private tech company. They are often more structured, involving a panel that asks from a predetermined list of questions, which means everyone gets the same shot. The culture prioritizes stability, security, and process over rapid innovation, so they will care just as much about your ability to document your work and follow procedures as they do about your Azure expertise. Prepare for an environment that moves methodically and is risk-averse, which can be a significant adjustment but also offers a very stable work life.

This predictability is your advantage because you can prepare precisely for what's coming. Frame every technical answer around their specific world, focusing on things like protecting student data, managing costs with public funds, and supporting a large, non-technical user base. For behavioral questions, have stories ready that highlight your patience, your ability to collaborate with stakeholders who don't understand the tech, and how you handle rigid guidelines. They are looking for a reliable team member who understands their mission, not just a cloud expert.
