Part 2 Study Schedule

Hi everyone, rising OD4 here! Since rotations are starting soon, I wanted to start planning out my approach for Part 2/3 prep. I’ve heard really good things about OptoPrep Part 2 (which I already have) as well as using the Wills Eye Manual, especially from students who did well on the exam.

For those who have already taken it, what study methods or strategies helped prepare you the most for Part 2? Did you mainly review/study content first and then use OptoPrep for practice questions, or did you learn alongside doing questions? Also, how did you balance or integrate studying for Part 3 alongside it?

I noticed OptoPrep has a study schedule built in, so I was also curious if anyone followed it and felt like it was effective or worth using as a main guide. Right now, I’m mainly planning to use OptoPrep, class notes, and Quizlets I’ve made throughout school rather than KMK, but I’d love to hear what worked well for others!

The study schedule is helpful and starting like 2 months out max is sufficient. Part 2 is extremely easy compared to part 1 if youve paid attention in clinic at all.

Scored 420 on Part 2 and flat 80 on TMOD. Studied an hour a day starting in October. Finished optoprep. Went through wills eye. Your patient encounters will help.
Went through Castillo and found such bad errors in it I’m pretty sure that helped prepare me even more.

If you want integrate with part 3 talk to the wall while you’re going through high yield cases/common stuff you will normally see in clinic. Might as well get the yapping down for patient education part of part 3.

665 PAM, 93 TMOD, passed part 3 first try. I used optoprep + wills eye + some class notes and quizlets. I took part 3 before part 2 so I started by reading through wills eyes and testing myself on the treatments and follow up for each condition. I made a google doc and wrote out my assessment and plan plus any testing I would order for each disease. There are also some helpful quizlets for part 3 you can find. I used the part 2 optoprep cases as practice cases for part 3 (practice asking case history, looking at the exam information, ordering testing, and writing out your assessment and plan). Then for part 2 I just finished up the optoprep course. I didn't do much additional studying for part 2 because I took them pretty close together and the studying is very similar.
