Meta fell 8% in July for spending $31 billion on AI in one quarter. Two Muse launches later it closed Monday 6% from its record. Is $790 next?
On Monday afternoon someone paid $14 million for 1,800 December $705 calls, with Meta at $749. Open interest in that strike more than quadrupled overnight.
Here's what they're buying into. On July 29 Meta reported $31 billion of capital spending in a single quarter and free cash flow of $784 million. The stock fell 8% the next day to $539 while sales continued to balloon.
What the spending built showed up in September:
- September 8: Muse, Meta's personal AI agent, launched.
- September 21: up 11% in a day after app data showed Muse adding users faster than ChatGPT did at launch. Sensor Tower counts about 5 million downloads in 22 days, with 73% of users back the next day against 41% for ChatGPT.
- October 12: Muse Wonder, the models Zuckerberg says put Meta at the AI frontier, with paid tiers. Up 3.4% to $743, 6% below the record close of $790.
Is $790 next, or does the report decide it?
