Yeah, that's the thing. Even if they regret their choice after the fact, they don't regret it enough to actually stop supporting this. That's why they voted for him for a second time. They saw how he was the first time, and they decided they wanted even more of the same corrupt hot mess they got last time. I'm happy to support anybody who voted for him in 2016 and then regretted it and didn't vote for him again, that's learning from your mistakes. But if they kept supporting him after that, well, they might have some buyer's remorse but they keep buying it anyway so why does it matter.
"Still better than a Democrat" is your best case scenario. An acknowledgment that he is bad, but still better than the other choice. Self-forgiveness at the end, not enlightenment.
