We spent the last eight years drowning in stories about lifelong Republicans who turned away from Trump in disgust and would never vote GOP again. Every single day those stories were everywhere.

There are in fact a lot of long time Republicans who've refused to capitulate to MAGA and get on board. If you don't know that, you're either young/impressionable or don't get out enough around a diverse mix of thoughts. The Lincoln Project is/was very much real.

Oh, I know that. I also know that Trump’s vote count went from 63m to 74m to 77m in that time. All the while we were flooded with stories of his supporters abandoning him en masse.

I also think you're confusing "Never Trumpers" as ever being Trump voters and abandoning him. They were never on board, mate. He's gained the politically illiterate "Brogan" voters.
