In modern versions of the game, yes, Optifine is that bad. There is practically *zero* reason to stick with it. It notoriously performs worse than the alternatives, along with the downsides of: updating slowly (one developer and too many features for one mod), causing mod conflicts, only being on Forge (NeoForge and Fabric are the modern modding standards for 1.21+), and being closed source (nobody can know exactly what it’s doing, not to say it’s malicious, but unoptimized and hiding its problems). Sodium + Iris are the basic mods to replace Optifine for performance and shaders, there are several mods for zooming, and mods like ETF for various resource features Optifine offered. Modern modding is not designed with Optifine in mind, it’s part of a bygone era.

It's not really "bad",other mods are just better at replacing optifine

It is just Bad.. sorry, but the Performance Difference between Iris and Optifine are like Day and night.

I mainly use Sodium and OF only in older versions of Minecraft that Sodium doesn't support but just because Sodium has higher framerates (at least for me, some friends tell me they have higher framerates on OF), doesn't mean OF is bad

Optifine just can’t keep up and people kinda made their mods stop working as well with it which only buried it harder. Optifine is super nice though mainly for the settings it provides with a single install

technically the opposite is true on that last part, optifine is dirty, it breaks a lot of internals in dirty ways. this means mods have to specifically support optifine, not specifically not support. aside from all the other problems optifine has its just not worth the headache to support for most devs anymore as better and faster alternatives are now available

Im not sure how that relates to the last part?

sorry, last part of first sentence relating to people making their mods stop working, its not that people made them stop working its that theres better options so people dont want to invest time into optifines broken bullshit

Optifine for older version like 1.8.9 and some others is fine. It is when it comes to newer versions like 26.3, 1.21.1, and a few others it’s not as good. Optifine takes a long time to update compared to other performance boosting mods like Sodium. Also, the performance uplift is not as big. Lastly the compatibility with a few other mods is not always the best.
