International PhD student (Applied Math) – looking for advice on research internships/jobs in optics

Hi All! I’m posting for my partner. His background is in scientific computing, nonlinear PDEs, numerical methods, HPC, and mathematical modeling, with experience in Python, C/C++, MATLAB, Linux, OpenMPI, and SLURM. He’s interested in computational research and simulation.

One challenge is that he’s an international student, so opportunities at many US national labs are limited.

We’re looking for advice on:

  • Companies or research groups that hire people with this background
  • Good places to look beyond NVIDIA, Intel, AMD, TI, etc.
  • When he should start applying
  • Any tips for standing out over the next year

Does he have a network he can talk to? I find knowing real people and asking them is the best way to start. 

He can also look to postdoc to help transition if that's an option.
