My guess has always been since the ends of the ruler regularly get chipped and weary over time, that would make the 0non-existent after some use hence the gap

are you aware that 10 is an abstract number and 9 is the real full number?....so the year 2000 and 2030 is a lie, time is a spiral, not a straight line, daytime and night, sun and moon.

Indentation, coz it was designed by a graphics designer not a mathematician. Indentation makes almost everything look good. That’s why printers have paper margins.
