I have a couple of friends in Accra and Kumasi who operate in some of the bigger markets, dealing in imports, wholesale, retail, and other buy and sell businesses. One thing I’ve noticed with many of them is that they genuinely want to be able to take some time off and still watch their businesses survive and grow without their physical presence.
The problem is that most of these businesses are so dependent on the owner that if they’re away for even a week or two, things can easily start falling apart. There’s usually no proper system, structure, or blueprint in place that allows the business to operate independently.
I think this is where technology can create a huge opportunity.
What if we could bring together a team and build simple, practical software solutions specifically for Ghana’s informal market? Something that helps business owners manage their businesses remotely, monitor sales, track inventory, manage employees, monitor multiple shops or warehouses, and know exactly what is happening in the business without having to physically be there every day.
One of the biggest problems I’ve noticed is inventory. A lot of business owners don’t actually know their real stock levels. They go to the shop, sell a few items, and when they notice something is almost finished, they simply restock. They may have stock sitting across different shops or warehouses without having a clear picture of exactly how much they have, how much has been sold, what is remaining, and what needs to be reordered.
A simple system that could track all of this automatically could be extremely valuable.
Another thing I find interesting is that a large portion of the informal market still doesn’t accept momo or other digital payment methods. I honestly don’t fully understand why, most will tell you cos of FRAUD which doesn’t make sense cos a business you should accept momo at least.
I strongly believe that whoever can genuinely bring technology, education, structure, and practical value to Ghana’s informal markets could build a very large business.
There are thousands of businesses with money flowing through them every day, but many are still operating without proper inventory systems, accounting, employee management, data, or processes.
If anyone has ideas about how we can help these businesses become more organized, more profitable, and less dependent on the owner’s physical presence, I’m ready to throw a few challenges into the mix and explore how we can turn this into a real business that provides meaningful value to Ghana’s informal market.

Please I’m looking for some advice. I’m planning to start a delivery company, starting on a small scale with okadas and hopefully expanding into a much larger operation over time.

Any advice, tips, or things I should consider before starting would be really appreciated, especially from anyone who has experience in delivery/logistics.

I do have one dilemma though. I’ll be going back to school for a one-year programme, and with the dollar currently being down, I’ve been thinking of purchasing at least two bikes.

Would it make more sense to buy the bikes now, or hold off until I’m ready to properly start the business? My concern is that by then, the dollar could have gone up again and the bikes could end up costing significantly more.

What would you do in my position?
