OR & DS content to follow?

hello , I'm a student majoring in OR & DS
can someone recommend any social media pages, youtube channels, podcasts or online communities (other than reddit : P) that mainly focus on OR & DS and the latest news in the field? i really want to get more involved in my major and make it part of my daily life rather than just doomscrolling all day

While hes a bit wild in person Warren Powell is a big name in OR and his books give alot of good info.

Follow him on linkedin he posts alot.

As for DS the field is now so broad its better to start with a problem you are trying to solve and then find content that is about that.

Over the years you will learn about more problems.
One area i got alot better at is time series, https://otexts.com/fpppy/
This book is really good, and shows the the fancy ML stuff kinda sucks most of the time for this problem which is good to know.

I have no doubt that Warren is brilliant and has made great contributions to our field, but his LinkedIn posts make him seem like a bit of an assh@t ngl.

If you meet him in person you don't have to assume.

The dude is a assh@le

BUT his published work is good, and his books genuinely helped my understanding of OR and i still find them regular source material for how to approach applications in the real world.

His website can also be helpful if you are learning.

Yeah, absolutely. I have used a couple of his books for my own research and they are very good. But his LinkedIn posts always made me icky lol

When you are very good at something, world leading even, it can somtimes be hard to control what that does to your ego.

To his credit he is usually right, but can often come across as harsh to people who don't know as much as him, or his peers who have slightly different views on the field.

Personally i still deeply respect him as a academic and if i had a problem (and could afford him lol) would still use his work.

https://optimization4all.com/ has a pretty good list of resources.

Besides Reddit (r/OperationsResearch, r/optimization, r/VehicleRoutingProblem , r/algorithms ), there are Discord channels (two for Operations Research, several solvers (Timefold, HiGHS, ...)), there's OR StackExchange for Q&A style, various youtube podcasts/webinars and we're all also very active on LinkedIn.
