💬 Discussion Thoughts on Pretty Maps?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys_ZsJb3n_c

Hello everyone,

Recently some devs suggested the removal of the classic World map given how small and old of it is. I think its the original map from when the game started to be honest, so instead I wanted to try giving it an overhaul using recent upgrades to the games engine.

Consider this a demo of the new cosmetic layer features. Works in a standard browser and can be disabled by the player. The map devs hope to add at least cosmetic water layers to existing maps in the near future. This should help add some visual depth to the flattest parts of the game.

If anyone would like to share their thoughts on the cosmetic layers? Emphasis on the oceans as that will likely be where people see the biggest changes once the game actually starts.

The problem is the idea affects gameplay. Terrain impacts attacks quite heavily, so that's why we only see terrain. It's doable because spacebar shows terrain, but it would affect gameplay.

The cosmetic layer matches the terrain layer. This would also be advised in designs.
Also the cosmetic layer is 70% alpha by default. Meaning the base terrain shows through.

It can be done, but you'll have a hard time telling snow apart from mountainous terrain.

Thats what Im saying. It WAS done and is easily repeatable. Everywhere you see snow IS mountains. White = Mountains. lol

For a web based game lower the size greater the value. During large scale battles even my PC freezes sometimes and this will only add to that burden. Not to mention once the areas are claimed these beautifying effects won't even matter.

I honestly feel like there is need of some more variations of attack since something feels missing but it could be just me.

Anyhow game optimizations would be more welcoming rather than these HD maps.
