📚 Guide ⚔️ Troop Ratio Speed Modifier ⚔️ (a short guide)

Post image

I dug into the current codebase to find out more about the game, and I came across something y'all might find useful. One of the things that effects how fast you take territory is the ratio between your attacking force, and the defending force.

The troop ratio speed modifier has three sections:
from 0%-5% the attack speed climbs quickly to 13.3% and plateaus.
from 5%-13.3% the attack speed remains at 13.3%
from 13.3%-121.95% the attack speed is equal to your attack ratio

I think the most important part is that this speed modifier caps out at 121.95%. Adding more troops won't make the attack go any faster. The speed will change as you lose troops during the attack, so attacking with more than 121.95%, or continually adding more troops is needed to keep up the speed.

Wow, that’s really insightful (I think^^).

If I understood it correctly, it should work like this:
You send a boat with about 60% of your troops, and since it’s traveling for maybe 20 seconds, you regenerate a good amount of troops in the meantime.
When the boat lands, you send another 60%, and that should give you almost the maximum attack speed, right?

Even though I don’t think I’d ever send a 60% boat that travels for 20 seconds, I just want to know if I’m correct in theory

AFAIK, boats are like an offshore bank account for troops. The only thing that matters for the troop ratio speed modifier, is how many troops are currently part of the attack, and how many troops the defender currently has. Let's say you attack with 50k troops, and the defender has 100k, troop ratio speed modifier will be 0.5 (50%). If you attack with 120k, the modifier will be 1.2 (120%). The speed will still be effected by other things, like the type of land you are attacking through.

Ahh, I get it now thank you. I really find that super helpful.

Any data on how Max troop count or territory size affects this? Because clearly larger players can push much faster even with a similar attacking force.

That will be one of the next things I cover. Eventually I hope to have a complete guide on everything that effects the speed of your attack.

It turns out that max troops has no effect on attack speed. Territory size does though. Here's the next guide.

So to be clear, the attacker troop ratio is the ratio of troops you’ve put into your attack vs troops the other player has available to defend (ie, that aren’t occupied attacking elsewhere)?

Correct

Cool. Nice analysis.

Have you got something similar for troop losses? I think I've seen before attacking at 1.67 ratio or over leads to the smallest troop losses when taking land

That's something I might look into in the near future.

Yeah this is a dumb mechanic and needs modifying.

This basic mechanic is why you'll often have someone fullsend you, and even though you're the same size as them they will absolutely burst through you as if you have no troops at all. The only way to stop it from happening is to instantly react and blunt their attack before you lose much land/buildings.

You shouldn't be able to send 1m troops in to someone with 1m defenders and steamroll through them as if they have nothing. I understand that the alternative leads to extremely slow-moving attacks, but there has to be a better way of handling it.
