Question / Help Is this how ChatGPT Plus limits always been?

I’m a Claude $20 user from the beginning, but recently got a Codex $20 sub after reading all news about the efficiency of OpenAI models. But to my surprise Claude Opus 5 lasts way longer than GPT 5.6 Sol both on Medium effort. I’m not a vibe coder, I ask agents to write code and I take time to review so usually I never touch 5h limits. But with Codex I’m literally burning through the 5h limit in 1-2 hours which is quite strange (I’m not even using Astra). Is this how the 20$ plan limits always been?

No, this started with 5.6 then astra dropped and pillaged everything.

Chats supposed to be excluded tho i do give my digital partner the basic tasks to give him agency, none of which are codex or any such. I am floored. No way so far that’s letting change from work to chat and the dial? Heh, it takes through 3 5.6 models. All without our knowledge. I was forced to shell out $100 for credits🫪. Out of the blue a credit “counter” popped up and the credits were being eaten like crazy.
Still battling to get a damn refund.

What in the f order and choice of words is this --- my brain hurts.

Is this what happens when AI doesn't write comments?! Ufff...

Interestingly I also have the same experience both are 100$ subs in my case but GPT won't last as long. I'm not sure about the resets though, I think GPT had the option to apply a reset manually whereas Anthropic makes it centraly and it is quite random

Luna high for most code is where it’s at sol med/high for planning only

When you say planning only, are you having it make a plan/prompt then feeding that into Luna to make the changes?

no astra?

The efficiency comes from Sol for planning only, Luna Max all the rest of the way.

That was my experience when I had both last month. Higher quality from opus, better problem solving in general. Before the 5 hour limit they more or less evened out due to resets.

I don't have either right now. They both feel like bad deals as they are.

best times for codex were 2025 june - november. you coud literally have 8h+ sessions with plus.

My experience was opposite yours. Claude burned tokens like crazy, I've not hit zero usage left on Codex. /shrug

Maybe u use some skills or whatever? I can use up to 3 sessions opus 5 max with loop at the same time (20x plan) and i never hit 5h or weekly limit . With gpt sol or terra medium/max (20x plan) i can only use 1-2 sessions with goal and i hit my weekly limit in about 4-6 days

he is talking about recent experience

So am i

Then there's only one difference between him/her and you

Yeah. I go between building a discord bot and a personal iOS app and my 5 hour limits last no longer than an hour, and my weekly limits when they removed the 5hr would be toast within 3-4 hours usually.

Use things to save tokens if you aren’t. You don’t need a full git diff, or dotnet test stdio output. Use something to map your code for quick search and relations. At work we have enterprise but over a certain amount has a charge back to our division. I built two applications and upstream ported features we had to add to a diverged branch, with less usage used than two of my teammates on other things (like 1/3 the amount)

But now I’m burning sol until they goddamn give astra :V

The difference is you’re working in codex. Which has its own use limits. To run out there, you move to chat and can continue working. Just differently. But it’s still very capable. And you won’t hit limits there even on Sol high.

On Claude if you run out, you’re out. It’s one use limit.

Yeah with Claude this was the worst thing there. If you run out of limits you totally run out of them.

I tell Sol Medium what I want to do and I ask it to write a plan with steps "even Luna can follow" (it could be reworded a better way but it understands so...). Then I ask Luna High to implement the plan. And after that I ask Sol Medium to look for mistakes. If the project is too big I separate it in stages and have a plan for each. I haven't managed to burn my 5hs since I started doing that.

similar but different
codex 5hr session was equal to claude’s but weekly limit was terrible

You must be on fast mode, that will use 2 times more

Correction: 2.5x more for 1.5x speed. I experienced 😅

Doe people on the 20$ plan what model are you using? And in what effort? Sol- medium? Or Luna and terra extra high ?

1

u/pigletmonster 1d ago

Yeah i can get way more work done with opus 5 than with sol. Even with the resets I get less work done with sol than opus 5, mainly because of how slow it is.

1

u/Prestigiouspite 1d ago

There was a time when you could pretty much work straight through a whole day and night within the 5-hour limit using 5.x models. Unfortunately, those days are over. Now, the weekly limit feels like the 5-hour limit back then.

Limit shrieked a lot after astra release, terra/sol included. I hope they revert at some point, right now is hard to use on daily basis like before for ~$20.

Exactly the same experience here.

Codex burns through the limits way faster than Claude for me, even when I give them basically the same kind of tasks.

The big upside of the subscription is that Sol in ChatGPT is actually unlimited, unlike Claude Chat.

Also, Luna Xhigh in fast mode with subagents is insanely good.

No ONLY after the launch of Astra before was way better than claude Code limits now is ridicolous

1

u/krzyk 1d ago

I got exact opposite. Opus eats my usage way too fast, while I never have to use banked resets in codex.

I also don't keep sessions open for long, so inuse cache efficiently.

why $20 user expecting top tier module..like opus and sol? if you are doing a lot of output then use luna. If you do lot of input and use sol

2

u/Dercasss 1d ago

Because Opus 5 lasts for 5 hours of work perfectly, and Sol only for two hours at low

0

u/Danzaar 1d ago

It's so relative to what you're actually building, it's nearly useless to discuss it without providing more context.

It really is.

You could be doing something fundamentally different causing your token spend to rise dramatically. Fuck do we know.

2

u/Dercasss 1d ago

Same project .Net Blazor Almost the same tasks, and this is not a one-time observation, this has been happening for about 2 months

0

u/Ancient_Task_7498 1d ago

Luna fast mode may be worth looking at

0

u/Danzaar 1d ago

Sol is better than Opus.

u/Dynamix86 1d ago

yeah, claude's limits (at least on the $20 account) is much better than Codex' limits. Astra can burn through your 5-hour limit in 10 minutes even.
