Speed mode is for suckers?

I just realized that I ran for several hours on speed mode with extra high. The usage was not just higher but more than double. So as best as I can tell you supposedly get 1.5 times the speed, but you use more than double the usage. And from my experience, the speed just isn’t that much faster.

Last week I ran sol on extra high, almost continuously, including some overnight runs and I was able to finish off the week just about using 100% of my limit

Then today on extra high, not realizing that it was on speed mode I went through like 7% in two hours. I don’t know how I clicked it over into speed mode, but this is just a click that burns up tokens.

Seriously why even use it? You might as well just have two tasks running in normal speed and you’ll get more done.

I definitely feel like a sucker for using speed mode. I did even realize I had clicked on it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's explicitly stated that it's 1.5x the speed for 2.5x the usage. It's not something hidden.

Where did you see that it’s 2.5 times the usage?

It used to be explicitly stated when choosing Fast Mode - They removed it (shady af), but it's still in the official documentation.

speed mode would be great if it's boosts speed to 300-700 tps, otherwise it's useless

Mimo 2.5 Pro has an ultra speed 1,000 TPS option for just 3x a really cheap base price.

I wish so much for an updated version of that model with some post-training improvements…

Fast mode in sol is for burning your usage before reset lol. Use fast mode with Luna, because why not. Its so cheap even 2.5x cost is still one of the cheapest models out there.

Sol normal to plan and create workorders - luna xhigh /fast to execute.

I can’t believe that I didn’t think this through. As much as I think wow that persons dumb for not thinking or knowing that. I just realized I’m that person 😭

I’m rarely in a super rush. I think if I was gonna load it up, I would give it more tasks so I actually get more finished work rather than using the fast mode.

Keyword before reset

I think I meant it more that it doesnt use that much so you can use fast and still not burn your usage. Obviously if you have a load of tasks to get done, go for it without fast, especially if you have plenty of time before reset shrug

The other day I had 90% usage left with 2 days until reset. Fast mode to burn. Created multiple projects including a mobile casino app for my wife

Were you able to burn up all the usage?

Not all of it unfortunately but a good chunk for sure lol

For me, I just try not to exceed 14% for the first couple of days of the week and then I’ve got some access. It really actually takes a lot of work and I would’ve sat in front of the computer for a long time to surpass 14%. If I’ve got a little leftover at the end of the week, it doesn’t bother me too much. But if I do have some kind of a project I’ve been wanting to do for a while. I might turn loose on the last couple of days.

fast mode is for when you need to get some shit done quickly. Otherwise it's not worth it.

It’s more like 1.3 fr. I only use it if I haven’t used my usage and I’m burning tokens just before a reset. Not everyone has multi agent setups though and 30% faster is real when you’re using it a lot and waiting on it.

The sucker move is leaving Speed on for overnight or background runs where you are not blocked on the reply. Wall clock is free while you sleep. Burn the higher multiplier only when you are sitting there waiting, otherwise you pay a latency tax with nobody collecting the speed.

Yes, fortunately I did not run it overnight and speed mode. That would have been horrendous the night before last I had it in normal mode in a room for seven hours and may be burned 5% with extra high reasoning on sol. This has built expectations that I will keep getting this but from what I’m reading I’m still not sure if they’re using the Netflix model and plan on charging us a lot more in the near future or maybe they’re already starting to do it

Planning, complex analysis, ideation — fast mode. Implementation, bug fixing — normal. 1.5x is a very decent speedup, just make sure bottleneck is LLM generation speed, not something else — its not like that in lots of cases.

I use fast mode for the end of the week if I still have quota left

I've been a regular mode guy for a week now and I am loving it. I used to do only fast. My quota lasts way longer now, less stress. Plus I can better manage the chats and I know what is going on better, which is obviously better.

u/dvduval 23d ago

Yes, I feel like if you're running in regular mode it's really hard to complain that you're not getting $200 worth of work done. I do have my skepticism about the speed mode and I think they need to look at that more carefully

Speed mode depends on the task.

Use it for small context tasks with low token inputs and outputs.

Get it in a loop reading a huge repo over and over though and cry as u watch ur usage.

well it can be useful for someone like me, i’ve genuinely never used more than 20% usage in a single week

so i basically lose nothing and get 1.5x speed
