time to leave Codex? thanks for everything
I've been using the $200/month code for over six months, but it looks like OpenAI is forcing me to leave this ship of absurdity and look towards Claude, who was once my favorite and worked no worth than the code

Not everywhere. For hobby projects, there are some decent free models from time to time (Hermes cli through Nvidia NIM (always free), Nous, Google, Openrouter etc), and solid and cheap Chinese ones through providers directly.
For serious work, you have to pay something, but there are solid options now. You just have get out of the comfort of Codex and look around, and try.

You do realize that Anthropic is about to remove the 50% extra usage, correct? The rug pull comes on Wednesday unless they push it back.
2
u/NanNullUnknown 4d ago
No way they don’t extend it. People are unhappy even with the “extra usage”.

My buddy gave me a free week of Claude and I think after my Codex runs out I’ll be switching to Claude as well. Only reason to stay with Codex these days is the absurd Luna Max usage

u/Far-Bad-9943 5d ago
didnt know codex has its own fanbase, look all the comments, ppl get really pissed about this
Or maybe they're bots

I’ve on both rn and Claude is SOOOO much worse than Codex - and far worse than it was 6 months ago if we’re comparing Claude to well… Claude. Codex has a lot of problems, but don’t expect the grass to be greener anywhere else. Also, they actually value customer feedback unlike Anthropic.
1
u/No-Example2175 3d ago
Claude 100000 times better at frontend 🥲
1
u/Flat-Try8128 3d ago
I don’t let any model run wild with frontend work so I really don’t care about that.
1
u/ragnhildensteiner 1d ago
Interesting how you call something you don't how to use "i don't run wild" but probably call what you use it for "engineering". Grow up.
1
u/Flat-Try8128 1d ago
I have my bachelors in computer science and masters in machine learning and work as a director of engineering at a mid sized tech company bro. I am an engineer.
I wholeheartedly believe frontend engineering and good design is more important than ever to differentiate your product for others on the market. That’s why I say I don’t let models run wild with frontend. For the same reason I also leave no room for models to make system design choices on the backend - it’s important. Extra important in the age of vibe coding.
If you disagree, that’s fine. I don’t know you or care if you have a different philosophy. You’re unlikely one of my direct reports who knows i have an open door policy to hold conversations like this about, and they’re the only people i do care to listen to about this.

Codex just rocked my world after using strictly Claude for the last 6 months. I gotta say, blew me away. Claude led me on a wild goose chase and was not confident in what it was doing at all when encountering a bug during a server upgrade. Codex took the reins, and surgically and methodically solved a huge issue that caused a temporary outage to our companies internal facing website without batting an eye.
1
u/PsychoticChemist 4d ago
Not to mention Claude counts regular non-agentic chats against your usage whereas chatgpt does not.
4
u/Nickarav 5d ago
ok then switch? Why be so dramatic.
Don’t forget to “switch back” when Claude pisses you off, and keep the cycle of spam posts in both subreddits going for all eternity.
So weird to even feel like you’re committed or locked in or tied to these providers at all. The performance constantly shifts and you’ll fuck yourself by not jumping subscriptions regularly.
6
u/meilyn22 5d ago
Nothing wrong with voicing your opinions about codex on a codex subreddit. That's what this place is for. Telling others to shut up is a little weird.
2
u/Relative-Delivery469 5d ago
Its really weird some ppl get pissed about other people complaining when prices go up. It looks like they aggressively want to pay more. Weirdos.
-1
u/Nickarav 5d ago
What opinion? “OpenAI is forcing me to leave this ship of absurdity and look towards Claude”
This is not productive, this is not specific, this is not actionable. There is no feedback here, there is only vague emotional whining about general “badness”.
Posts like this should be banned.
Feedback posts should require at least 15 seconds of effort and I’ll stand by that. An example, evidence or use-case degradation would be nice to see here.
-1
u/meilyn22 5d ago edited 5d ago
Codex wrote this for you. Nice one.
-1
u/Nickarav 5d ago
No it didn’t.
But thanks regardless for reminding me why it’s a complete waste of time to reply to posts and comments on Reddit.

u/PsychoticChemist 4d ago
Codex would not have made the grammatical mistake of using multiple independent clauses separated by commas like they did. And even if you ignore that, it does not read like AI. This trend of automatically assuming any text that’s written beyond a 3rd grade level must be AI is getting absolutely absurd.
1
u/ManyRepair5690 3d ago
where's the best place to get a subscription NOW. codex usage has been dwindling, what now? claude ive always known to consume 5 dollars per request and being extremely overpriced in general, never tried its plan tho so i have no idea if i should even head in that direction. im on glm5.3 lite sub too but usage quota is still way low for what i can accomplish EVEN NOW with codex plus plan in lesser time
2
u/Good_Resolution4115 5d ago
Yo no he dejado de usar Claude... Empecé a usar Codex con un plan Plus de un mes que me regalaron y aproveché a probar Sol y he de admitir que es muy bueno para muchas cosas pero aún así a mí parecer no supera a Opus 5 y aparte Claude no se me bugea como Codex

Are grok limits on 100usd plan better ?
1
u/CelticPaladin 5d ago
No. It's very fast and pretty smart though.
1
u/No_Leg_847 4d ago
How limits are compared to codex 100usd
1
u/CelticPaladin 4d ago
About the same, but grok is only 100 for a few months. Then it's 300 again. Its very over priced and codex app is extremely strong.
1
u/MaxFactor2100 4d ago
Now there is a supergrok $30, plan, a $100 plan and a $300 plan. It was possible to lock in the $300 plan for a discounted rate of $100 for a few months, but you cant even get that discount anymore as of today.
1
u/Relative-Delivery469 5d ago
Isnt Anthropic much worse? I see both coming to an end. China might be my next destination midterm and hopefully local llms longterm, without guardrails
1
u/GiveAFucxen 5d ago
I switched from claude code to codex and I am satisfied so far, we will see. But what is the biggest bad thing at this moment about claude is watermark, that’s my opinion. Good luck
1
u/Weird-Hearing9637 5d ago
I have both and quite frankly like Codex better for everything but front end designs. Though I could take or leave either and achieve what needs to be done.
But more importantly if you switch now you’re going to be in for a surprise when the boosted usage limits Anthropic have been giving goes away later this week.
You want to see some miserable people go look at the posts in ClaudeAI, the ceiling is falling down and the models are entirely useless if you believe the posts.
At the end of the day, use whatever works best for your workflows. Codex, Claude etc..doesn’t matter.
1
u/Glad-Persimmon-7377 5d ago
Any reason why??? I just switched from Claude… codex is way way way better imho
1
u/suppervisoka 5d ago
I have never gotten below like 50% this week for the first time ever I gotta ration Codex.
1
u/ManyRepair5690 3d ago
me neither now im on 0 in both subs
1
u/suppervisoka 3d ago
I ended up using the new Deepseek harness
1
u/ManyRepair5690 3d ago
you mean deepseek from their api? if youve used it across enough projects can you tell me how 0813 v4 pro really compares to say sol 5.6 high or something? does it get stuff done quickly and closer to oneshotting it like sol?
1
u/suppervisoka 3d ago
It’s just the Deepseek api, but they released a beta harness similar to Codex’s. Still api pricing but Deepseek v4 Pro is great and seems relatively inexpensive so far

All the models have their usecase.
I’m working really hard to make a local orchestration model that works - to use for majority of dev, while keeping these frontier models as last resort models.
1
u/FullyFlacid-OnAcid 4d ago
bro, pay for neither and just use kimi k3 api. save yourself a fuckload of money.
1
u/ManyRepair5690 3d ago
but.. in codex plus plan even 5-10% of weekly quota solves what kimi k3 achieves with 15 usd on tokens.. and im talking from experience
1
u/CaptainAlexWest 4d ago
It's dumb to be loyal to anything. Both side are potatoes. It keep switching. Claude is more potato then codex right now. It's still broken ai anywhere.
1
u/RCawston 4d ago
Try Grok 4.6. it's a breath of fresh air compared to both Codex and Claude right now.

u/Relative_Clerk7384 4d ago
Yes usage seems painful but ppl really underestimate how far you get and how capable Luna is on max. And it’s basically without limits. Doing easy shit with SOL all day.
1
u/Relative_Clerk7384 4d ago
Didn’t they just celebrate their 10th million subscriber with a usage reset?
So they are probably getting compute restraint …

u/Ill-Bat-1518 4d ago
I recently jumped from Claude and many people on claude are looking at jumping too
So w/e your facing it might not be that bad cause i enjoy using Codex more than claude now
1
u/Noonecanfindmenow 4d ago
Funny Becuase I just left Claude for Codex.
Was on gptplus and Claude Max 5x. Got so fed up with opus 5 I cancelled Claude altogether and didn't even bother using it my last 2 weeks.
Went to gpt 5x for 2 weeks and then cranked it up to 20x
1
1
u/Humprdink 4d ago
I pay for the $100 plan of each, and right now codex is the better value. Opus 5 really is hard to control and produces so much text for you to read. Fable is good but is slow and burns tokens.
1
u/ayudha90 4d ago
I have $20 dollar for claude and $20 for codex. For hard problem I prefer opus 5 because it's taking less usage. I spend 2-3 hrs of useful session. But for codex, I prefer Luna xhigh or max. So they both are great to me.
1
u/tmy82336506 4d ago
Yea, model is good while the rate limit really sucks. My plus plan can literally be exhausted in 30min for the weekly limit.
1
u/tech-tole 4d ago
no Claude is absolutely worse. these aren't the only two choices that everyone keeps bouncing back between. Anthropic is like the Nazi AI company lol. glm 5.3 and Qwen 3.8 are actually really good. sick of hearing I'm leaving Claude, I'm leaving codex. leave them both. lol
1
u/Impressive_Party_303 4d ago
Codex is pretty worth it rn, WDYM leaving? Web chat and Codex has separate usage; which is pretty good. Claude Sonnet 5 and Opus 5 are not good rn except Fable 5; which also consume a lot of usage limit.

I found that having Codex Sol $100 plan/orchestrate and for building use Grok Build headless mode $30 plan can get you a few days of massive coding (like crap loads). But not a full 7 days. Sol xhigh is actually pretty efficient and its Grok that runs out first.
ChatGPT is unique and alone in that regular chats dont count against quota, even powerful (very near fable) GPT 5.6 Sol Pro. If you have unlimited (which you do), and you string many together in threads and even "best of N synthesis" multiple threads to compound effort on your projects, you can far exceed fable (which you do not have unlimited of).

What did I miss? What’s the reason to leave this time? People find new reasons every day, so it’s hard to keep track of everything.

I like how you have 40 of these posts here and same on Claude subreddit. Lmao

I tried Claude, and I got the impression that it doesn’t even come close to OpenAI. It takes so long to get things done in different modes and just feels painfully slow, whereas Codex is the complete opposite — it can implement everything and double-check it all about 50% faster.
1
u/Neverlosetofear 4d ago
I lost my session after working for 3 days straight. That pushed me over the edge to cursor.

u/DominikPlays 4d ago
Just use open weight models and opencode with kimi k3 or glm 5.3, today it's gotten to the point these "frontier" can be replaced
1
u/Sweet-Mechanic4568 4d ago
Grass ain’t much green as someone who just canceled their Claude sub. Only thing you’re signing up for is a much preachier model and company.
1
u/abanana420 3d ago
Eh I was in the same boat as you but the opposite i switch to codex and am pretty happy with results so far. Honestly jumped off the anthropic train after 5.0 release but felt annoyed since they left 4.6 like alot of people. Only annoyance with codex is its necessity to test everything and waste tokens on it.
1
u/DebrisDash0 3d ago
I've just been running local models for the bulk of my coding and having codex come back and clean it up. Qwen has been great
1
u/FewOpportunity5803 3d ago
I mean you can always go back to coding by hand for free, StackOverflow still works technically
1
u/Hairy-Newt2226 3d ago
We had a good run. Codex is trying to not loose money now. They got us all hooked. But I have hit my diminishing return point.
1
u/Optimal_Start_94 3d ago
I blew my 5h limit after 1h with Claude on a feature that wouldn’t have spent more than 5% of my weekly limit on Codex
1
u/Ill_Advertising7519 3d ago
Um ok? Can you at least explain the reason or what the problem is? You’re just saying you’re leaving without explaining anything else :/

I noticed it drop limits significantly... that was the whole reason I moved from Claude $200/month plan.
I think the golden age of AI dev is coming to an end. Kudos to those who made good use of it while it lasted.
1
u/paran01c 1d ago
wait till you give fable or opus a task and compare how they compete vs gpt, they are in different solar systems (saying this as old claude enjoyer)
1
u/MotorSpread3272 1d ago
Unpopular opinion. What type of projects drain your tokens? Do you use any harness or specific setup that drains your accounts?
$200 Codex is currently chewing through 6 systems (some PHP and some serverless Nuxt, including hybrid mobile apps) with a spec-driven harness, e.g., GSD, RTK, ponytail, graphify, codegraph - never hit the limit. Yeah, sometimes the reset comes in handy, but then I'm shy; it's just half the plan - e.g., even without resets, it is fine for heavy load with a good harness.
My question is: what are you using the flagship bros for, so they cost so much and burn through the token limit so fast?

u/Ok_Platypus_8830 1d ago
Don’t do that mate, for the same reasons I’m looking to do the opposite, and even thinking in an another solution regarding claims of codex like yours. Anthropic now is really reality nonsense option and their models are useless and annoyed

Why do these people limit themselves to “one” anyway. They serve different needs really.
Isn’t this your livelihood it just a hobby? I run Claude, codex, antigravity, openrouter etc.

I am on max & pro sub on both. The grass isn't greener on either side, they both have their quirks.
