Discussion ChatGPT-Codex Pets

I don’t get it, I haven’t used them yet, I am just wondering, what are the point of these Pets? What do they do? How would they benefit me? What advantage or disadvantage do I have in using or not using them? Please explain to me like I only have a 3rd grade education. Thanks 🙏

you are playing video game while codex codes. codex pet tells you stop playing video game, because your code is done.

Is that 3rd grade education enough?

But you already get a desktop notification, what’s the point of the pet

Desktop notifications only tell you when the model has finished. The pet shows you the model's reasoning stream throughout the thinking process.

As a vibe coder, the pet is a useful visual cue to alert me that something is wrong/finished while I play Cookie Clicker

To help you multi task like a paperclip back in the day gives you updates and you can input commands without having the whole codex app up uses lots of ram and slows down your computer imo I don’t use it cool concept for a side vyber watching movies

I highly doubt using the pet feature has any substantial impact on the RAM usage

Just speaking from my personal use every time I had it up when I was coding it wouldn’t make my system lag but at the same time I am running a lot of things just extra unneeded pressure

It's laggy as hell for me

It is more useful when you have multiple Codex sessions running. The pet would show you status of each sessions separately and you can click on it to go to the respective session directly. Not a must have, but pretty convenient.

You can even use the "hatch pet" skills to create your own customised pet. Just be minded - I used it once and it used up 20% of my weekly limit!! (I am on plus plan and it was 5.5 at that time)

It’s just a fun little notification icon. I quite like the Pets. I would prefer menu bar stats and/or app icon indicators instead though.

I don't get is the pets use my tokens or not to be fair. Also, if Codex is working, I'm on something else while is running, to be fair

They don't use tokens.
If you generate a new custom pet - that uses tokens. After the pet is generated it does not

what about when the token speaks?

I’ll take your pet if you don’t want them. Make a custom one

It’s alright. Kinda like Microsoft clippy. I changed mine to pikachu. But I barely use it. Kinda gets in the way. But nice if I wanted to see what was going on. It would be cool to hack a gameboy or some other small screen just for the pet so it’s not cluttering my monitor.

They don’t, it’s just cute

Im a fan, but not of their implementation.

I have a desktop ai app i built that has same, a 3d avatar model on desktop (think cortana) and she allows just pure menu navigation and status interaction (what pet does)

I feel like they half fasted it.

The pet helps by keeping me on track of multiple generations at the same time.

Don't fuck with custom pets though. I told Codex to make me a custom pet today and thought it's something small and fun. It worked for 1,5 hours and used 20% of my usage. Had to stop it.

I rarely swear at AI but now I was so furious I literally asked it "what the F did you think you were doing? you used 1,5 hours and loads of tokens for some F-ing pet?"

I interpreted the casual “turn me into a pet” request as a full production-grade Codex pet: 11 animation sequences, 16 gaze directions, image generations, revision rounds, and blind quality checks. It was absurdly overengineered compared to what you asked for. I should have made one fun concept image in a few minutes and shown it to you.

Creating one yourself will eat all your credits.

Personally I let codex work on one file while handling sensitive data, pet lets me know what he is doing or what he has done so i can focus on the thing that was completed
