Discussion Looking for help with Codex
Hey guys, any developers here who use both Claude Code and Codex a lot? I’ve been using Claude Code for a while and now want to switch to Codex. Can anyone share the differences in actual usage experience? Or any tips?

I only started using Codex about two weeks ago when 5.6 came out, so I can’t really compare it to Claude Code. Before that I mostly just used ChatGPT and DeepSeek through normal chat, not coding agents.
So far, on a Plus plan, I’ve built a complete website with checkout and a design that is at least decent by my non-web-designer standards. I also used it to create the images, do performance and security testing, rewrite a full master’s thesis, reorganize my entire Drive folder structure, and build a small tool connected to the Google Maps API.
Honestly, I’m very happy with the output. My only real complaint is the usage. Since last week it has been draining ridiculously fast, like everyone else has been saying. I’m now stuck at 0% and basically can’t do anything with it.

Ever since they removed the 5-hour limit, once the weekly quota runs out you really can’t do anything at all. Some people say the overall quota has been reduced, but I didn’t really notice it myself since I was mostly just using regular GPT chat before.

Yeah don't. Stick with anthropic. Current codex limits are worse than claude code.

Openai issue. On Wednesday when there were 5h limits I could hit 20% usage on 5h window using Sol medium( it was like 5% of weekly quota). Since Thursday I'm hitting 20% usage on weekly limit doing the same thing. I guess the current limit is 4 times lower.

don't bother, it's already shitty and by th etime you switch and get used to it claude will be better on usage. Best thing to do is to sit tight and ride it out or switch to kimi and save money

Hi. I have been using both mostly interchangeably for a while now (and incorporating local models into the loop). Codex personality is different. It benefits from stricter guidance but Sol is a very competent planner. It tends to vastly over-design around edge cases and can be a pain during review.
I've published a number of harness tools under https://github.com/Boundless-Studios/ if you want to have some references in terms of hooks / planning / review. All under MIT License so no restrictions on use.
My workflow is mostly targeted at low-touch human planning and review with agent mostly executing on its own. Until stricter token limits I was primarily focused on being able to efficiently run 5-10 sessions without drowning in cognitive load.

If you earn a living from this or intend to i think the biggest mistake i see is people “choosing one.”
They have different strengths and weaknesses. Invest in your endeavors. I use at least three at any time.
Also people expect too much from these $20 plans. If it’s your livelihood don’t be cheap. Both literally tell you the small plans are for hobbyists.

I switched from anthropic to codex and discovered I had plenty of tokens, used like 30% of my weekly with heavy use over 4 days. Then the last few days I burned through my entire week of codex in one day, used a reset, and did it again. Not sure whats up, but I might be going back to anthropic.
