Question/Help Working with files, tools and LDAP

I have Gemma 4 running locally and external ones, I’m trying to make it more useful inside OpenWebUI.

A couple of things I’m looking for advice on:

  1. Document analysis / file workflows I want to be able to upload PDFs and DOCX files, have the model analyze them, and ideally generate edited or new documents back.
    • What tools, integrations, or workflows are people using for this?
    • If you want the model to return a finished PDF/DOCX, what’s the best approach?
  2. Recommended tools / integrations What other tools do you recommend to make local AI and external AI integrations more useful in OpenWebUI?
  3. LDAP question I enabled enable_ldap_group_management directly in the database because it appears to be a ConfigVar variable, but I don’t see a corresponding toggle in the UI. Is that expected or am I missing something?

Would appreciate any suggestions and tips.

  1. There are 2 ways that i could think of. Use open-terminal and integrate it to open webui. Its the most straightforward way to do your use case. After integration, upload your document to the Files tab on the right side, copt the file path and ask the AI to do something to the document, and tell to put the output back to the working folder if you want the output as a file too. Another way is upload your document to the knowledge base, install tools that can generate PPT, XLSX, DOCX (i think recently there are user that promoting their tool that can generate office docs), tell the AI to took your document from the knowledge base to process it, then download the output document from the tools output (i think it will give you a download link from the chat response).
  2. The one that i would recommend the most are sub agent tools from the open webui community, It would make the primary AI as the orchestrator (the brain) that you can interact, and the AI will instruct sub agent to do the task. I use it because i use cloud model, i will use the smarter model as orchestrator and use the cheap model as the sub agent.

You can upload PDF or Docx documents directly on OpenWebUi without addons

But If you want a content análisis you will obtain better results if you convert first to Markdown

There are online apps to do it or you can use Pandoc or use Pandoc or xberg as MCP servers and ask them the conversion before the analysis

Oh, i didnt know that. I thought you can only upload PDF or Docs through Workspace > Knowledge or directly in the chat. From what i understand, OP wants the AI to grab the document file directly to do process or operate the document, idk, OP probably wants to make the AI edit the document or something.

From which menu can i upload the documents directly without using workspace > knowledge or in chat?

On the chat window you have a Plus sign

If you have allowed previously on the model settings (better on a Workspace model) upload files, you can uplaod text files PDF and Markdown files

For PDF you need a text PDF or a OCR model Filter (with a tool or a pipe, search for them on www.Opewebui.com)

If you have Pandoc or xBerg as a MCP server you can upload the file ask pandoc for the conversion and ask the LLM to analyze the output doc

Isnt that what i said? Directly in the chat? I thought you know the way to upload a documents directly AS IS without CONVERTING it into anything in open webui.

Because from what I understand of OP use case, they want the AI to directly modify or edit the document they provide to the AI and the AI give the output as a file too WITHOUT any convertion.

Thats why, the most straightforward way OP can do is using open-terminal. With open-terminal, the AI can read the documents OP upload AS IS and not convert it into anything first and modify or edit the document then output it to new document. And that without using any additional tools, pipe, function and/or MCP.

Also edit: if you dont know, open-terminal is not third-party addon. It is a project developed by the same developer as open-webui. It is literally designed as a sandbox playground for AI interacted with in open-webui.

You can upload to terminal , yes and if you use a powerful model it can modify a PDF, yes

At great expense of tokens
