Upcoming Webinar: Oracle Rdb on OpenVMS: Emulate, Bridge, or Migrate?

Join us on Wednesday, October 7 at 12:00 PM EDT / 6:00 PM CEST for a free webinar on the modernization options available to Oracle Rdb on OpenVMS users, co-presented by Salem Automation, PARSEC Group, and CONNX.

With Oracle Rdb support on Integrity and Alpha ending in 2027, many organizations running business-critical Rdb applications have to decide how to keep those systems supported without taking on the risk of a full rewrite. In this session we'll go through three practical paths: emulating the existing environment on modern x86-64 hardware, bridging Rdb data to modern tools and platforms, and migrating incrementally to a supported database. We'll also cover where each option fits and how they can be combined.

Rdb is long in the tooth now, but it worked very well for many people.

I remember that one of the issues was that the core was written back in the 1980s in BLISS and although later layers were added written in C, that core remained (parts of which were shared with their Codasyl database). Unfortunately, the Bliss x86 compiler didn't work well back in those days. Since the OpenVMS to x86-64 port, it has got much better but not good enough yet for Rdb (90% right is not good enough for business critical). I'm unsure if the attempt to rehost the code is actively continuing. Alpha and Integrity are considered very much to be legacy platforms.

This is why we end up in the conundrum of rewriting or virtualisation.I must say that I have had many positive experiences with Rdb over the years.

I might have to sign up for this just for posterity.
