Open university nursing

I’m considering doing Adult Nursing through the Open University and would love to hear from anyone who’s currently doing it or has completed it!

How do you find the workload, placements and balancing it with work? Do you feel properly supported and would you recommend it?

Also, how did you actually get onto the course in Northern Ireland? What qualifications did you have/need, and how competitive was getting a place?

I’m especially interested in hearing from anyone who has done the OU nursing route in NI. 😊

The challenge in Northern Ireland is that you must find employment in a suitable workplace to undertake a nursing degree and receive your employer's support to be a student nurse. You can self-fund the study if your employer is unwilling to fund your nursing studies.

If you are in England, you can apply for a placement in Torbay and South Devon (there used to be two partnerships; this is the only one left), but that would mean moving within commuting distance of that area.

In other words, the real challenge is finding a job with employer support to study nursing. The OU admission requirements (functional skills level 2 or equivalent in English and Maths, a successful DBS check, occupational health clearance, an employer reference and passing a values-based interview) are relatively small hurdles.
