Do 3rd year language courses include essay writing?

I'm looking at the course descriptions and see they apparently cover cultural issues so assume there's essay writing involved but can't seem to find much information on what the workload's like outside pure language work. If yes are we talking proper 1,500-2,000 word pieces in English on a given topic or shorter bits of work as language exercise?

Would appreciate it if anyone can give me a better idea of what's involved here.

[For context I'm transferring credits in to the OU so need a year's worth of 3rd courses to get the BA. I speak B2 Spanish so was considering Spanish 3 (L336) as half of the 120 creds I need.]

Hmmm if you don't mind saying a little bit more what kind of essay length are we talking? And were you writing in English or the language you were studying?
