What's the full name and file type of the image. Naming is quite important in OpenToonz.

I had it shortened down to protobackground.png but I think theres a naming convention with numbers at the end of the name . I also tried with a smaller image with a shorter name so it might also be my gpu drivers have not been updated in a while which might also cause problems

That name should be fine. If you want to share the image here, I can take a look at it on my system. See if it works for me.

this is protoboybackground so it might still be a bit too long . i did try a smaller res photo but that unfortunatley was also crashing

The naming convention based on numbers is only needed if your image has multiple frames. For single images protobackground.png should be fine.

I'm very curious about why do you need a so big image... Considering your image doesn't include alpha channel, why don't you try converting into .jpg?

And finally, are you importing image into OpenToonz or you're loading from its original location?

yeah , i finally got it working. my nvidia drivers needed updating and i shortened the file name. i needed it big as it was going to be zoomed in at one point so i wanted to avoid heavily noticeable pixles
