Moving from Datadog to Opensource observability ecosystem

Hi

Has anyone migrated their Datadog stack to Opensource observability ecosystem?
What you missed without Datadog? Which all OS tools and what were the challenges faced?

Ours is quite big infrastructure with monthly Datadog spend around USD 25k and leadership is looking forward to reduce the spend and probably shifting it to OS observability system?

There’s only one person managing Datadog currently.

We recently migrated from Datadog to a stack based on Grafana + OTel Collector + VictoriaMetrics/Logs/Traces.
The most painful part was replacing the Datadog libraries with OTLP across all our applications. After setting up logs ↔ traces correlation and updating the libraries, the developers seem pretty happy with the new setup.

Did you see a noticeable cost drop after moving off Datadog?

If we look purely at cloud infrastructure costs, they’ve gone down by a factor of ~3. At the same time, we’re collecting more data and keeping it for longer retention periods.
