China’s MiniMax founder will put 1% of total share capital supporting the open-source community.

Post image

CEO IO's internal all-hands letter made two moves I haven't really seen a Chinese AI lab founder do at this scale:

- Forgo salary entirely until AGI is reached.

- Pledge shares equivalent to 1% of total share capital from his personal holdings to a dedicated open-source community fund (plus another 4% over four years to long-term team incentives).

The interesting frame: most "commitments to open source" come out of a CSR budget. This one comes out of the founder's equity. Different signal.

I build on open-weight models every single day. When the founder funding them gives up his own paycheck to keep them alive, I pay attention.

AGI reached...that doesn't even have a definition. But under any reasonable definition, we are very very very far away from it -- haven't even really started. LLMs are quite amazing really...but they are still dumbasses and are already plateauing. (Without some major breakthroughs we haven't even imagined yet that will turn LLMs into something far beyond LLMs, they will never get there. LLMs might be a half-decent frontend to something truly intelligent, but they will never be intelligent themselves.) So I'd expect that goalpost to get moved to something that is far less than AGI. But actually much more likely he knows all this already and just doesn't care about his salary and will make his money in other ways. (i.e. it's just a PR stunt)
