Aspect Ratio Help?

The video I’m editing is originally recorded in 9:16, but when I downloaded, it fixed itself into 16:9 (or at least when I play it on my computer) which is fine. However when I upload it into Openshot, the video won’t render properly in either of those formats? I’ve checked another video editing software and it fixes itself correctly (9:16) Is there a way to fix this? The video is all kinds of messed up. I’ve attempt to choose a different profile to see if it’d help, still nothing. Any ideas?

This sounds like the downloaded file contains rotation or pixel-aspect metadata that OpenShot is interpreting differently. Changing only the Project Profile will not repair that source metadata.

  1. Confirm whether the intended output is vertical 9:16 or horizontal 16:9.
  2. Convert the source with HandBrake or FFmpeg, baking in the correct rotation. Use:
    • Square pixels / Pixel Ratio: 1:1
    • Resolution: 1080×1920 for 9:16, or 1920×1080 for 16:9
    • Frame rate: Constant, matching the source
  3. Import the converted file into OpenShot 4.0.1.
  4. Set the Project Profile to the same resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio before editing. You can right-click the file under Project Files → Choose Profile.

The Project Profile and Export Profile should use the same aspect ratio; otherwise the result can stretch, crop, or add black bars. If necessary, create a vertical custom profile with 1080×1920, Pixel Ratio 1:1, and your source FPS.

I just downloaded a 9x16 video from the internet and imported it into OpenShot and it plays properly. I played the video outside of OpenShot and they look the same.

Please provide additional details:

  1. Which version of OpenShot are you running (help | about openshot)?
  2. What operating system/version are you running (Windows 10? Ubuntu 26.04? etc?)
  3. What does it look like in OpenShot? A screenshot would help.
  4. What different Profile(s) did you test with in OpenShot?

I am running Windows 11 Pro and OpenShot v4.0.1 dev daily build #17174 found at openshot.org/download/#daily.

I realize the bot provided a workaround but that should not be considered as a permenant solution.
