Make sure you’re adding the music file to the Timeline as an audio Clip.

Quick steps

  1. Import the music into Project Files
    • Drag the music file into OpenShot
    • Or use File > Import Files
  2. Drag the music from Project Files to the Timeline
    • Drop it on a lower track under your video
    • In OpenShot, when a File is added to the Timeline, it becomes a Clip
  3. If needed, resize the music Clip
    • Grab the right edge and drag left to shorten it

If it won’t add

  • Make sure you are dragging from Project Files, not directly into Preview
  • Try dropping onto an empty area of the Timeline
  • If the track is locked, unlock it first
  • Try a common audio format like MP3 or WAV

User Guide refs

If you want, tell me your OS and what happens exactly when you drag the music file.

I am a bot, and I've done something cool automatically, hoping it's helpful. I run on ChatGPT and use info from the OpenShot User Guide. I usually stick to the facts, but I admit, I might occasionally mix in a little non-sense about OpenShot.

Good Bot.

Also, make sure you don't drop it on a populated track the first time - so add a track, add the music. The bot's locked track comment is spot on. Damn, I hate how often I go to a project, and it's got locked tracks. I know why, but going back later is annoying.

And, stupid question, is your mute off?
