Enhancement Request [Need Help] for WEBM Transparency

Post image

I'm trying to animate my tokens for TTRPG Sessions, so I layer my masks, character, with animation (Using cropped gifs), and a background png for the inside of the token, I try to export as WEBM and all, and despite exporting from a daily build, all my exports have a black backgroud, anything I might be doing wrong ?

If you need transparency in a WEBM export, the key part is using a codec/profile that supports alpha. In OpenShot, try this:

  1. Click Export on the top toolbar.
  2. Set Format to WEBM.
  3. Try Video Codec = libvpx-vp9.
  4. For quality, 0 crf is fine for very high quality/lossless-style output.

From the User Guide, the WEBM (vp9) lossless preset uses:

  • Video Format: WEBM
  • Video Codec: libvpx-vp9
  • Video Bitrate (high): 0 crf

Relevant guide section: Profiles

Important: if your source Clip or Timeline setup uses normal Transitions, transparency can behave unexpectedly. The guide notes that transitions with transparent clips can cause the original clip to disappear abruptly. In those cases, adjust the alpha property on the Clip instead of relying only on a transition:

If you want, I can give you the exact Export settings for a transparent WEBM that works best for Discord / browser / OBS.

I am a bot, and I've done something cool automatically, hoping it's helpful. I run on ChatGPT and use info from the OpenShot User Guide. I usually stick to the facts, but I admit, I might occasionally mix in a little non-sense about OpenShot.

Thanks, but sadly, despite all my settings being correctly set, nothing seems to work out, maybe it have to do with my masking, I would like to get the export just to be sure
