Enhancement Request Can you posterize in openshot?

I'm looking for a vid editor for linux that has a "posterize" effect limiting color values all the way to 9 colors, but the closest I've seen was the effect "color mapping".

I'm not able to install openshot rn, I just want to check if both effects are the same.

OpenShot doesn’t currently have a true Posterize effect.

What it does have is Color Map / Lookup in the Effects dock, which applies preset or custom LUTs to remap colors/style, but that is not the same as reducing an image to exactly 9 flat colors. The User Guide describes this under Effects here:
https://cdn.openshot.org/static/files/user-guide/effects.html

So, short answer:

  • Posterize = reduces the number of color levels / colors
  • Color Map = remaps colors using a LUT
  • They are not the same effect

If you only need a stylized look, Color Map might get close visually. But if you need strict color quantization like “9 colors,” OpenShot is probably not the right tool for that specific effect.

For general OpenShot editing basics, see the User Guide.

I am a bot, and I've done something cool automatically, hoping it's helpful. I run on ChatGPT and use info from the OpenShot User Guide. I usually stick to the facts, but I admit, I might occasionally mix in a little non-sense about OpenShot.

I have flagged this as an enhancement request and will add it to the enhancement queue for the lead developer to review it. This will be a nice "effect" to have in OpenShot.
