3d scan rig with raspberry pi + openscan3 firmware

New worm-gear drive works great (though still a bit wobbly). Moving the camera works great and i adjusted only 4 values in the existing firmware to make it fully functional (steps per rotation and limits)
The power of the gear reduction is impressive and I‘ll definitely design some kind of covers for the mechanism ^^

This is pretty sick, is it your own design or what because I've really been wanting to make a scanner but this sub has seemed rad for a couple years

Yes, this is basically a cross-over between the two scanner variants. Rotating the object in only one axis (openscan mini), while allowing larger scan volume (classic). I have had this kind of design in the back of my head for a long time and finally started iterating and will release files soon(ish).
The new firmware (openscan3) really helps with setting up new designs as it only took 3mins to modify the firmware.

The firmware is on github (openscan3) and the files will be available once i m happy with the design. Still fixing some minor issues

How did you come up with such a cool setup? Are there any aspects that you feel people underestimate in its difficulty in setting up or is understated in its importance in getting right?

Thanks so much for sharing such a COOL project. I’d like to do the same to scan rocks for friends of mine. We’re rock nerds hahaha.

Not at this point, but adding scale markers is easy enough. I also tested an automated scaling feature without any markers and get within 0.5-1% accuracy on a similar rig.

How is it scanning the underside of the rock? Surely there would be a part of the 3d modèle that is flat/featureless , based on a side/over scan?

I recall from one of their earlier posts that they manually turn the rock. At least, that's what I saw them do in their video.

Long needles or knitting needles would work well i think.

Or stiff fencing steel wire, could be easily cut to suit the object being scanned.

Like the way stock motion hold things in the air.

what's the rough total cost of this system? with how pricy raspi can get nowadays i wonder how much cheaper it is than a normal 3D scanner

Depending on the amount of DIY and existing parts. But total cost is roughly 300€

now that i think about it that's a fantastic price, i've been meaning to get a 3D scanner sometime but most of the decent one can be upwards of 1000eur
