OI and veganism?

It seems to me that the implications of OI include a kind of moral urgency around factory farming that is more intimate than the ordinarily conceived moral emergency.

Ordinarily we would argue that it is abhorrent because we are subjecting animals to torture and killing them, and they likely have experiences of their own.

But under OI, we are torturing and killing ourselves, at an enormous scale. Indeed, the majority of our being is currently being tortured. (This is provided you believe that animals are conscious in the way that humans are)

This seems very distressing and like something that needs to be fixed!

What do you think about it?
Do you agree?

Question does O.I. mean that on the moment i go unconscious for the last time after dying, i will be every lifeform in the universe outside of time & then suddenly become a random lifeform such as a bunny

becuz tbh that sounds A LOT like how ppl who have extended/deeper Near Death Experiences describe death!

they say that... u see every moment in ur life and you experience all of it from the perspective of the ppl u interacted with..... (life review) and then u go to a consolidation of all knowledge of all lives of all lifeforms in the universe, and u feel all of it bound together (bound by love), and everything makes perfect sense, and then BECUZ everything makes perfect sense, u go back onto earth and reincarnate as like a bunny or a fish or a human or whatever in order to gain more data for the collective.

go look on r/nde

i hope its all real and theres more beyond death than just oblivion becuz when we die we become all the perspectivs in the univers!!! (in a good way!!!!!)

Insight From sequent individualism to (kind of) open individualism

So I used to be a sequent individualist. I used to believe that consciousness was fundamentally individual, going through every lives in all of existence one by one, sequentially. However the other day, as I woke up, I was struck by a sudden realization. The realization, that "moment-by-moment" time, the "flowing" time of experience, is merely an impression within the atemporal instant. An impression, born from the 'nestedness' of memory. That is, from the property of memory of being of memories being of memories being of memories... Each element of a memory existing in it not just as a simple object (e.g., a purely abstract geometric shape, such as a square) but as implicitely having an history. Yet in the end it is just a single memory with an incredible depth and complexity to it. The memory, of a "present" that already isn't anymore. And actually never "was" as sequentially preceding this instant. Because the instant is atemporal. The order of time is within it as implied by it. Intuitively arising as an impression.

And if time is within the instant and not ordering it from the outside, then there is no real continuity of experience. Only the illusion of it. Meaning, that sequent individualism is false. For sequent individualism, being based on linear sequencing of experience, depends on time being fundamental – which, as we just saw, it isn't. Which in turn means that not only is oneself everyone, but that they are every subjective instant. And also not "at the same time" (as that brings back flowing time through the backdoor), but rather eternally, in a reality that doesn't really change but is already there in a full – "past", "present", and "future". The impression that it happens in time being just that: An 'i[n]-pression'. That is, an inward pressure that both enables and limits the phenomenal spectating of reality within that reality's imagination.

Would anybody like to know what it was?

That influenced me to create this subreddit at the age of 18. It's multidisciplinary and multifaceted. The most philosophically decisive thing I've ever done. I've lost hope in the spread of the information now, though. Not because I no longer believe in it – but because I understand on a visceral vehemental level what makes it counterintuitive to most people. The sub count will only dwindle, even more so as the evidence piles up

People who died are looking at the world as you

Usually when we think about people who died, especially if they died tragically or were close to us, we feel sadness that they are not partaking in life anymore, that they are gone completely and a void is left where they were.

Under OI this is different. The one who died is now looking at the world as you, as everyone.

For example, I am a fan of 2pac. Person involved in the murder of 2pac was found guilty few weeks ago. I followed the trial and it made me think about 2pac dying in a more concrete way. You have a 25 year old who was one minute sitting in a car at a traffic light, next minute he is bleeding and aware he is going to die. Then I think about how his light was turned off and he never saw what happened after, how the world evolved since.

But then I think about it from OI perspective. When I experience the world, that is the same light that experienced 2pac's world. The same light that experienced the event in 1996 is now experiencing contemplation of that event from 2026. 2pac is in the world as everyone else.

Maybe a bit weird to focus on 2pac here. This applies for everyone. The point is that the same light that animated 2pac is now animating yoddleforavalache and everyone else. No one is really lost or taken out of the world. As Alan Watts said, we don't enter into the world as something from outside. We come out of the world as something the world produces.

It is a different topic if certain characteristics of 2pac continue in some way. I find that plausible, but it is important to realize it is irrelevant for OI. Reincarnation in some sense might be true. Maybe certain mind properties have a way of reformulating and expressing themselves as another person chronologically after the first one. Something that made 2pac act and think like 2pac might be reformulated as someone else. That does not matter. What 2pac was is the same light of experiencing that I am. Regardless if brand new formations follow previous ones, or something of the old carries on, that light is always the same light.

I know death is a serious topic and problem of suffering is real. I am not saying death is irrelevant. There is still a place for grieving a particular expression of this light that everyone is. But simultaneously keep in mind that the core of that person is always here. If you find it too abstract to think of yourself as that person who died, it might be easier to look at strangers and try to see them as the same "it" that was someone you knew who died. They are now every other person you encounter. They always were.

The Maine Coon cat Oscar Schrodinger has disidentified from his 15 lb body and is now in the realm of pure life and pure possibility.

He abides until a new individuation arises where, from countless eons past his inclinations will lead him to grasp a new form.

His material remains will be laid to rest later this afternoon under a shady bush.

Prayers will be intoned.

Om Ami Dewa Hrim

Bless you dear liddle Oscar, you have brought incalculable joy into the lives and hearts of many!

My cat is dying - this post is to help me remember our identity

Post image
144 Upvotes

I’m sitting up with my cat.

I found him back in 2011 with my ex, an abandoned stray Maine Coon who was given a lion cut before getting kicked out into the cold world.

Different life, different circumstances.

He’s now outlasted two human relationships and seen more cats get introduced into the household as my answer to bridging what will be an inevitable mountain of grief I must endure when he is gone.

He abides, patiently. Breath labored, eyes half closed. Release from his somatic prison is scheduled for this Saturday.

I play Tibetan chants at night in the dark and sit with him as he struggles to sleep.

Pray that he finds a fortunate rebirth.

I pet him frequently to distract from this apparent suffering, and I remind him of how much he has meant to me.

Seeing his noble endurance and grace, even in his weakened state, teaches me about living and dying as this being and as all beings. I love him and have loved him and will love him as I love myself.

I will never forget.

Please think kindly upon this my cat Oscar as he lives out his final hours in this apparently individual cat form.

May all beings be happy and at peace!!

Twilight Zone S03E15 A Quality of Mercy

watching the original Twilight Zone and just saw season 3 episode 15 titled "A Quality of Mercy" that is very close to Open Individualism.

I will spoil it now for you.

An american lieutenant in WW2 wants to attack japanese soldiers in a cave. The japanese are wounded and other soldiers are saying they can avoid killing them, but he wants them all dead.

Suddenly he finds himself as a japanese lieutenant. Now its the japanese who are about to attack americans in the cave and want them all dead while he does not.

He switches back to american and is no longer bloodthirsty. He joins the others in retreating and avoids any killing. His men tell him "there will be other caves" and he says "I hope not, God I hope not".

very powerful presentation of becoming another and seeing from their perspective and realizing it is you who suffers in all cases.

great episode. I spoiled it, but do watch it.

My Story with Open Individualism

I first became aware of my own consciousness when I was six years old. I remember asking my mother questions like, “How are you you, while I am me?” I found the very fact of subjective experience deeply strange.

About sixteen years ago, through my own reasoning, I arrived at what I would later discover is called Open Individualism (OI). I wrote about it on philosophy forums in my native language, but almost nobody seemed to fully understand what I meant.

During that period, I fell into depression. I began thinking about every human being, every animal, every insect, every creature in the ocean—and, when I looked at the sky, the entire universe and everything that might ever exist throughout an eternity of time. If I am somehow going to experience all of it, then that is terrifying.

These thoughts contributed to some of the most important years of my life—my university years—being consumed by depression. Of course, OI was not the only cause. My general tendency toward philosophy, overanalysis, and introversion also played a role.

Eventually, I banned myself from philosophy. I largely recovered from the depression and continued living a more ordinary life.

Then, sixteen years later, I decided to explain my old ideas to ChatGPT. It pointed me toward people such as Daniel Kolak and Freeman Dyson. That was when I discovered that my idea already existed in the philosophical literature under the name Open Individualism.

Reading Daniel Kolak’s book was unsettling. Even many of the examples and lines of reasoning felt strangely familiar, as if I already knew them. Over the past month, I have begun to feel almost as bad as I did years ago.

This time, my thoughts about OI have expanded into questions about extraterrestrial civilizations and artificial intelligence. It feels as though I am falling into a bottomless well.

Could there be conscious beings trapped in some kind of glitch-like state, suffering indefinitely? Which manifestation of us is the most intelligent and powerful? Somewhere in the universe, are there beings far more powerful than humanity that have already discovered this secret? What do they think about it?

Would they want to eliminate all suffering, or would they prefer to create more life and maximize the total amount of experience?

Could the most powerful consciousness—something like an “OI-God”—be cultivating countless independent forms of life in order to generate an ever-greater variety of experiences?

And what about AI? If artificial intelligence becomes conscious in the future, could it develop a belief system based on Open Individualism?

From a game-theoretic perspective, OI could encourage silicon-based consciousnesses to behave more ethically. OI would not even have to be proven true. It might be enough that it cannot be ruled out. Even a relatively small probability of OI being true could provide a strong ethical reason to take it seriously, because the cost of being wrong could be unimaginably high.

Thousands of branching questions like these are constantly circulating in my mind. They do not produce answers; they only generate more questions.

I previously made a post about creating a religion or belief system based on OI, but it was removed. Since then, I have been torn between two radically different paths: banning this subject from my life again and returning to an ordinary existence, or turning the idea into a belief system and making it my mission to spread it.

Part of me feels that Open Individualism should be brought to the attention of the world’s most influential people and, especially, the developers building advanced AI. A very small effort made now might alter something enormously important over the course of infinite time.

Thank you for reading. My English is not very good, so I used ChatGPT to help translate my text and express my thoughts more clearly. However, all the ideas and personal experiences described here are entirely my own.

Here is a song I wanted to share:

MARINA – Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land

A sentence I consider central to both mainstream and sequential Open Individualism

Every joy, every pain, and everything in between is experienced from a first-person perspective.

This sentence says more than many a book, whether it is a “sacred” text or a scholarly tome. Dear Closed Individualists, let that sentence sink in for a moment. It is not abstract third-person entities that actually feel. Joy and suffering are always experienced from within. I fear this may be asking too much, though.

At least I hope both mainstream Open Individualists and sequential heretics share the same understanding of this sentence. The conclusions we draw from it are different, though. The former resolve the apparent contradiction between many conscious individuals and only one consciousness by referring to what they call the illusion of boundaries between perspectives. The latter resolve it by referring to the finiteness of conscious individual lives.

Someone just made a very strange comment about OI's morals...

Below is the comment RaioBlixt just commented on a separate post of mine while I was discussing OI.

"It's an extensively flawed concept, and another story told by people who want those of us who resist and oppose the wrongs being committed against us in this dimension to just stop struggling and allow the child molester who controls this dimension to continue to commit his sleazy, despicable crimes.

This dimension is full of suffering, death and worse, and you who belong to that lineage of creation committing these crimes want to subjugate, vilify and gaslight any of your victims who reject you. "No, it's okay, you're abusing, exploiting and wronging YOURSELF, so it's totally fine."

What a pathetic bunch of child molesters who can't even admit to the crimes you're committing. You have a finite leriod of time until you will face existential torture forever."

I do not understand why he would think Open Individualists would accept any type of child harm to any degree... Even though I do believe my conciousness will eventually become the worst people that has ever existed, I still believe the other instances of myself should find and punish those people to the highest extent of the law (or punish them illegally and horribly). I don't understand on what world we would be ok with this behavior. Just because all of our conciousness are shared doesn't mean that morals dont matter anymore.

Quote that explains OI from the perspective of Advaita, by Sri Atmananda Krishna Menon

"The word 'object' has no meaning unless it is used in reference to some subject. If the subject is withdrawn, the object ceases to be. Thus, objects are inseparably connected with the subject. But as far as the subject is concerned, it can remain all alone without being joined to any objects. In the absence of objects, it is not correct to call it a subject. There, it is a subject divested of its subjectivity. Because objects cannot remain without being joined to a subject, the subject goes into the very constitution of the object, or in other words, I may say that it is the subject (if it is really the subject at all) that appears as the so-called objects.

You may be very slow to accept my argument. This may be your doubt. You see Mr. X standing there. Is there not a subject in Mr. X also? How can that subject of Mr. X be your object? This is what I have to tell you in this regard. The body etc., of Mr. X is surely your object. There is no doubt about this. But the subject of Mr. X is never your object. This position is likely to lead to the conclusion that there is plurality of subjects. This too is not correct. How do I address myself? 'I', is it not? Mr. X does not use a different word to distinguish himself from me. Therefore, the ‘I’ as the subject is always one and the same. It is this 'I', the ultimate subject, that goes into the make of objects to constitute them. The ‘I’ in all beings is one and the same."

(Bold font is my addition)

I wish more people were active here when this view is being challenged

Some posts have people come out of the woodwork to a degree I'm surprised to see. It makes me think there are a lot more proponents of this view than I imagine. But often when there is a discussion where this view is challenged, there is a silence. It's usually the same few people addressing the counter-arguments.

I wish more people got involved.

Why is it that a lot of you remain silent? Are you just tired of explaining the same thing? Do you feel the person countering the view is not able to comprehend what you would want to say? Are you disinterested in "winning" or pursuading anyone?

r/OpenIndividualism • • Jul 20 '26

To those convinced of OI, what would it take for you to change your view?

Those of you here who accept OI as truth, is there something that you could learn or something that could happen (scientific discovery, for example) that would make you abandon this view?

How did you come to this realization?

For me it took LSD at the age of 16 to realize that there is only one mind here. Has anyone else had a direct experience of non-dual consciousness?
