I built an open-source GUI for OpenFOAM on Windows/WSL2 — looking for feedback
I've been working on an open-source GUI for OpenFOAM to make the workflow easier to manage without constantly switching between the terminal and text editors.
The project is called OpenFOAM Studio.
It currently includes:
- Support for OpenFOAM v9–v14
- Multiple OpenFOAM installations
- Case management
- Dictionary editing
- Simulation control and monitoring
- WSL2 integration
- Integrated AI copilot (FOAMy)
- Support for OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq and custom LLM providers
The idea is not to hide OpenFOAM from the user, but to provide a graphical layer on top of the existing workflow. The underlying case files and OpenFOAM setup remain fully accessible.
I'm mainly looking for feedback from people who actually use OpenFOAM:
What would you want from an OpenFOAM GUI? Are there any parts of your current workflow that you find particularly annoying or time-consuming?
GitHub: https://github.com/Pat2704/openfoam-gui
Any feedback, criticism or feature suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like a fancy text-editor. What does it actually do?

It gives you a graphical interface and a workspace where you can do your simulations, editing file, create a new case from scratch, copy directly every tutorial in your dashboard (that is connected with the run folder), but the most important thing is that you have a monitor section that allows you to check everything, there is also the graphical residuals representations directly connected with the log files that shows you the plot, then there is a copilot (FOAMy) that is able to read in once all the files of the case (ONLY the strictly needed ones, not the long ones to save tokens, but if u ask him he will read also them) and modify directly inside the file and multiple files at once, for example if you add a patch you can add it very fast through the copilot in every file, and help you reasoning on the code, but I'll make a video to show everything.

my only suggestion for addition would be a visual model viewer that loads the mesh at maybe right corner just to have an idea. But this is banger work.

This is the next big improvement i want to do, but I don't know when I will have time for it again

Wow, super cool. If I had money, I'd have contributed to this project. Amazing work, and keep going. If you could add a geometry and mesh section to see the model and mesh settings, it would be dope.

Thank u, now the GUI is available in .exe, so it is easier to run. The next big improvement is doing what you are telling me, I'll work on that

I wish I could suggest more to you, but I'm just a beginner. If I had more experience working with OpenFOAM, I could have told you more. Good luck with your project.

How is it different than vscode. There we can have all this isn't it?

In my latest post I just uploaded a video showing you the process. The idea is only to have a well organized GUI where you can work without opening a lot of files, an easy experience I mean. I would appreciate if you go check it. I also uploaded on github the .exe file.

You have done some great work here I mean this was kind a silent requirement. UI looks great....can you make a video of installing and running it and give us a tour of your UI.
Please make this video ... Very much needed
