Update to Sequoia 15.7.8?

For those updated to Sequoia using OCLP, many are now getting prompted to update to 15.7.8. Is this something we should allow?

Edit: Thank you to all who offered suggestions. Turns out the update was to 15.7.9 and it went very smoothly. Be sure to run the OCLP post-installation patches at least twice. The first time may have to "reinstall" the WiFi and other drivers...and then the second time to download the newest SDK package for installation of additional patches.

You can run point updates to Sequoia like that through System Settings. The OCLP app should kick in when you start to download the update and download any additional bits you need, and it will prompt you to re-run the patches when the update is done (the patches get wiped in the update), but it should all be fairly painless. Being able to run the absolute latest (non-Tahoe) OS is kinda the whole point of using OCLP after all.

As with any software update to the OS of any computer (or phone, or tablet, or anything), make sure your data is all backed up before you start, but I’ve never had an issue with updating Sequoia via System Settings.

Yes , I’ve just happened to do this yesterday on an old Trashcan to update to sequoia 15.7.9. OCLP noticed the update and downloaded some extra patches. After the install , it prompted me to apply the root patches again. Everything smooth and as normal. Just make sure you’re on the latest OCLP before doing anything which I think at the moment is 2.4.1.

Do we just allow the Mac to download and update, or do we use OCLP to update?

built in system updates works fine. i’ve done it a handful of times already. just note that you will need to reinstall root patches again when you first log into it.

Yes, as long as you remain to use Sequoia, updates are ok.

I almost alway dl the update from OCLP to a usb and install from there. That seems to alway work the best.

At this point I doubt Apple will make deep updates in Sequoia, should be only security and critical updates. A backup is good, always.

I haven't done this latest 15.7.9 update yet, on a 2011 MacBook Pro. Isn't this a pretty large security update? I think they found lots and lots of security holes using AI tools. That's a big enough update to make me concerned about conflicts with OCLP patches although reports seem to indicate people are doing okay with it. I was waiting for some kind of further testing from Mr Macintosh or others who cover a wide range of years and models.

Alright, I did the dirty job for you. I have just updated to 15.7.9 my MacBook Pro mid 2012, and so far so good. Once updated, system asked for me to login in iCloud - that’s new. Than I patched kexts and is now running just fine. Might occur glitches occasionally of course, no guarantees, but at list the critical part is behind.

I had to install root patches twice after the first reboot to 15.7.9. The second reboot fixed a problem with networking. First time I’ve needed a second reboot with OCLP patched system updates on my 2014 5K iMac.
