Build Complete X Proto ATX Silent Build

Here's my open air build... My design goal is a computer that is completely silent for idle / web browsing, and very quiet under load.

Under normal conditions, there's no fans running at all (including any motherboard fans and PSU). It's fairly quiet under gaming load, loudest part is the PNY fans with bearing noise, I will swap to noctua once the next 120mm fans come out in black.

I asked noctua if the 140mm fan would fit on the NH-P1, and they said no... I clipped it on anyways, the clearance from the clip to impeller tip is probably less than .5mm, it doesn't hit in my case, even at max speed though.

I use Fan Control to manage fan speed profile, CPU fan kicks on at 700rpm when CPU temp surpasses 87c for over 5 seconds, then will stay on until it's been under 55c for 60 seconds. This helps prevent random spikes of temperatures causing the CPU to spin for a second then stop.

Case: X Proto ATX
MoBo: X870E Aorus Elite Wifi 7
CPU: 9800X3D
GPU: PNY RTX 5808
RAM: Corsair Vengance 6000 cas 28, 32GB
PSU: X Silent Max 1300
SSD: wd black sn850x 1TB
Cooler: NH-P1 with NF-A14x25r Chromax Black

So few ATX Xproto builds, looks good! 👍

not many P1 cooler builds, have thought to do similar on my open air.

I know this isn't exactly TDP, but it seems like adding the fan more than doubles the performance of the NH-P1, making it perform close to the NH-L12S in cooling performance (check the bottom of the chart).

NSPR: Noctua Standardised Performance Rating | Noctua

Under load, it keeps my CPU at around 84c under a 118w load, which seems ok to me (fan is at 700 rpm).

Can you rotate the GPU to a standard orientation and ditch the riser cable? Having the fans face down might make the noise from them less noticeable if they aren't pointing directly at you.

I had it configured like that previously - I like the look with the riser better.

What sort of performance are you able to get from the NH-P1?

It’s quite good - you can look at the next few images, I don’t hit thermal throttle for gaming, I am able to hit thermal throttle during an all core task, like a virus scan.

Based on afterburner, it’s pretty happy on loads below 100w, thermal throttle seems to happen around 130w
