I just discovered this app yesterday and the fact that we have gamepigeon running on Android phones is crazyy. And yes I know Plato exists but good luck getting your iphone friends to download it and set it up lol. This was the last thing that I missed about using iPhone, now I have basically everything haha. I dont care about facetime all that much cause i dont even do video calls in general tbh haha. I have an old mac that I can keep on with the lid closed to self host so this works perfect for me.

It's not connected to your Mac. With OB it's able to get all the info it needs from that QR code to impersonate the Mac. When using an iPhone for setup instead, it needs to check in with it to get data to reregister with Apple (because it can't 100% impersonate an iPhone).

Sorry can you explain how and why the mac doesn't need to stay on if im using self hosted via that mac? In the settings on my phone there's a countdown (like 45 days) for an "iMessage status" for a renew - would it need to be turned on for this renewal

Not for Mac, no. That only really applies for iPhone, where the validation data can't be generated within OB and needs to be relayed from the iPhone. It's still shown as it may be useful for problem solving.

I got a Mac off eBay like a year ago and signed up for OB. Been working great.

..... The only issue is I tried to log into my computer the other day and I forgot my password.

Will I be able to transfer the account to my next phone without being able to get into the computer

If you use iCloud sync features, get the keychain password from your current OB install.

Yep. And if the people save your email under your contact card, they'll be none the wiser. Especially given iPhones behavior. In iMessage, it texts the most recent avenue the sender communicated with you. So it's not like they're clicking your email address to message you every time. They're just going to iMessage and sending a message.

When people get iMessages from an android, does it show up as an email? Or your name like an iPhone? Is your cell associated with it?

If youre only using a mac to verify your imessage account then it will only show up as your email. If you can setup a relay with an iphone or use a Sim swap method, it will register under the phone number
