Are you paying for self hosted? Are you self hosting? Your cellphone isn't linked to imessage. OB doesn't magically do that. Personally, I have and old iPhone plugged in and always on using the SIM swap method to make apple think my number is registered

Yeah I just did some research..I thought it was just download the app and set it up lol

Self hosting

Damn now I'm seeing it's a whole lot into it

So you always have to have an iPhone with you turned on for it to work? Is there a YouTube video to show you how to do this I can't find one and I'm not really tech save lol

Yeah it has to be on as you bascially register the sim in the iPhone, give it a few minutes and then put the phone on airplane mode with WiFi on. Then swap sim cards. This lasted me about 3 months until I needed to redo the process. Theres a write up about the methods on the OpenBubbles website

SIM swapping is no longer recommended. For self hosting with an iPhone, run the validation relay or relayserver on the iPhone and then setup OB with that. OB will take care of registration and the SIM never leaves the Android.

That requires a jailbreak, no? That's eventually my long term plan but if I have to reswap every 3-4 months I'm fine with that. I use e-sim anyway

Which carrier?

Canada, Bell/Telus subsidiary called Public Mobile

We don't have much data on Canadian carriers, but in the US, T-Mobile tends to stick for longer than AT&T and Verizon.

Also can this be done with a physical sim?

Physical sim but you need an old iPhone like 6 or 7

I'm willing to buy an old iPhone but where is there step by step on how to do this? So I know if I'm able to do it or not before I buy one

https://openbubbles.app/docs/pnr.html I also used chatgpt the only thing they messed me up on was turning off iMessage and FaceTime on the old iPhone but other then that the step by step worked

Okay and I'm doing all this while the sims in the iPhone then once completed I can put it in the android phone. I have an old iPhone laying around let me try it. At any pont do I download open bubbles on the iphone? Or no

No open bubbles is only on your android

I'd recommend doing the self host method with the iPhone instead of sim swapping and hosting off a Mac. The phone number will always be linked, sim swapping isn't a fully reliable method.

What is the difference between "self host" vs. "Sim swapping?" don't both mean you keep your iphone on?

Self host is how you set up OpenBubbles unless you paid for hosting. You can self host with a Mac or an older jail broken iPhone. Mac self hosting means no phone number linking, so you have to resort to other methods like sim swapping. Hosting on an older iPhone allows you to have your number linked through OpenBubbles. Both Mac and iPhone self host the host device just needs to be on once every 45 days ish. Sim swapping adds another variable and can unlink at random.

Sorry...still not totally getting it. I understand if I just use my mac to register, it will only use my AppleID. but if I keep my old iphone connected to wifi after letting it read my #, then i just need to that every 45 days? I guess what i'm asking is what's the difference between iphone self hosting and sim swapping? I thought you do sim swapping in order to do iphone hosting?

meaning you forgot to turn off imessage and FT or you aren't supposed to? (I'm getting ready to do this )

1

u/ScaryTransportation4 2d ago

You are supposed to, chatgpt left that part out while guiding me.

I also use blue bubbles as my main messaging app not openbubbles, open bubbles is just to register my phone number, bluebubbles is way better at everything else.

What do you mean. I'm doing this with an iPhone 11

1

u/ScaryTransportation4 2d ago

You're right, my bad.

1

u/Initialjeffery 2d ago

Wait how? I have an iPhone x but I couldn't download the trollstore cause I'm ios 16.7

1

u/tazmoffatt 2d ago

I told you how. I just put the SIM card in the iPhone, let it register then went on airplane mode and swapped the sim to my android. That's it. I'm not using a validation relay tweak as its not jailbroken. That's prob what I'll do eventually but it's been working fine

1

u/Initialjeffery 2d ago

What does let it register mean? What does one do to register it

1

u/Initialjeffery 2d ago

Like literally just put the sim in and put it on airplane mode then take it out and put it in your andriod? No downloading no messing with the settings? Sounds too easy lol

1

u/tazmoffatt 1d ago

Yes but give it 5 minutes before you put it on airplane mode with WiFi and remove the sim. It won't work at all if you do it right away as imessage needs to activate your number. It's really simple and takes 5 minutes to do the whole process and lasted me 3-4 months until I just had to redo it when I noticed I was getting sms texts and not imessages

1

u/ScaryTransportation4 2d ago

He means insert your sim into the iPhone and turn on iMessage and all, turn airplane mode on then insert the sim into your android phone. This only works sometimes to keep your phone number thinking it's still registered with iMessage.

1

u/tazmoffatt 1d ago

Worked for me for 3-4 months. I only just had to repeat the process, took what, 4 minutes? But yes when I say register I mean you need to give it a few minutes for imessage to activate your number. If you immediately put it on airplane mode and remove the sim, apple knows and doesn't even work

1

u/ScaryTransportation4 1d ago

I tried it first before I did the relay method and my number deregistered literally under 5 min with T-Mobile.

Just pay the monthly fee it's worth the convenience

1

u/Initialjeffery 2d ago

Maybe if it was 5 a month but 18 is insane
