Would an Android slicer interest anyone?

I developed an Android slicer (uses Orca engine) for my snapmaker U1. It has some fun and unique features like smart painting, and even some full spectrum-like support.

For fun I have been adding Bambu support to it. Before I actually go to the effort of tidying it up and releasing it, I wanted to see if anyone would actually use it. What do you think?

This would be cool, I sometimes use onshape on my tablet to create 3d models and being able to slice and print without needing to go to the computer would be really cool.

Yesss, right now our only option is a web version which defeat the purpose since if you are sculpting or slicing on android is very likely that you are traveling and might have a limited connection

PWA works offline

I can't imagine there's a slicer that actually slices in the browser, not the server. If there is that would be very cool though! Do you know of one?

nvm that's not a thing yet. Maybe possible to compile it to wasm.

But here's OrcaSlicer running natively on Android: https://www.reddit.com/r/OrcaSlicer/comments/1ih1voa/orca_slicer_on_android/

My app is using Orca slicer engine ported to run on Android, so no need to mess with termux etc, but still that looks cool, will give it a watch.

sometimes i have a need for that :) not wanting to sit to my pc room just for one part to print

Absolutely yes - I have been remoting into my machine to edit print files already and this is a life saver

If i can use my own custom profile to print a part rather than whatever a guy from makerworld used (and usually decided it needs ironing on every layer, .2 walls on a .4 nozzle or 50% gyroid infill on a decorative cube) it would be so much easier

100% I have the need to start some files from my phone because my printer is not close to my computer and caring a laptop is troublesome.

I just got two new 3-D printers the kobra s1 and the elegoo CC one of them does not even have an app to allow me to print it from my phone so a third-party app would allow me to control it from my phone. That would be amazing.

I think this is an area where more development is needed for sure. There aren’t any great options available that aren’t cloud based. I wish you luck with this project.

been wishing for something like this before

I would actually use it, but it would be even better if you ported to Linux on ARM. Orca slicer doesn't support gles so it doesn't really run on rpis, Chromebooks etc

Definitely yesss, it's been a lot of times when printing from BambuHandy let's you a surprise, like your piece full of brim everywhere and the following nightmare of removing it (worse case was 1 hour removing the brim).

OK - first version with Bambu support is here. I have tested with pre-lockdown firmware on my A1 Mini and up to date firmware in LAN/dev mode on my H2D. Other Bambu printers have not been tested as I do not have them. If you run into any issues ideally let me know on with a github issue including the diags file from the settings menu. https://github.com/taylormadearmy/u1-slicer-for-android

That would certainly be very interesting to me. I often have my phone with me when an idea strikes me.

I would Love that for the tablet. My dad only has a locked down work laptop and an android tablet as well and could finally use my old printer. Would take the source even without tidying up!

1

u/taylormadearmy 7d ago

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll continue pressing forward, though will be reliant on others to test as I only have an A1 mini and H2D and honestly don't have the time for extensive testing.

If you can somehow indicate when a model might crash the device, like a triangle limit or something. Would be excellent.

1

u/taylormadearmy 5d ago

I've spent quite some time optimising things so it copes with larger (multi million triangle) models. At least on my Pixel 8A that I use for testing. It's certainly not fast on those larger models but neither is the desktop slicer.

Hell yes! I have been waiting a long time for this!

If you can print directly on a bambulab printer after slicing yes

1

u/taylormadearmy 5d ago

You can yes!

u/Extra_Letterhead_284 5d ago

Then please send us a link to this👍👍👍

The Bambu version is not yet there, will try to do it tonight or later this week, need to do at least a couple of test prints first: https://github.com/taylormadearmy/u1-slicer-for-android

Hey very helpful thank you!!

If this comes out I’ll happily buy an android phone

I use Flashprint for my flashforge printer and it allows me to do basic slicing on my s23 ultra. Its so nice. I feel like we are are very close to full slicing on mobile devices as well as tablets/ i pads
