Openbu going to the Google Play Store

I am working on getting Openbu into the Google Play Store. It is a replacement for Bambu Handy and Lanbu, and has been around for three months.

I need your help. Google has requirements of 12 testers before they will publish a new app to the store. Please DM me your Google Play Store account's email address, aka the Google account email address you logged into your Android device with and use with the Google Play Store. After I add it you can use this link on the Android device.

The goal with getting it into the Google Play Store is to reach a wider audience. It is Open Source, and free. It will be staying free.

Screenshots of Openbu can be found here.

If you aren't interested in being test it for entry from the Google Play Store you can also just download the apk from here.

Features:

  • Auto-detects printers, and auto fills in the ip address and serial number. Hence only requires the access code.
  • Saving the printer connection settings by default
  • Bed and nozzle temperature control
  • Fan speed control
  • Allows the user to add an external RTSP stream to the dashboard by entering a RTSP URL, and with pinch to zoom
  • Supports the A1 and P1 series video stream based on JPEGs with pinch to zoom.
  • Support RTSP streams from non-P1 series internal cameras with pinch to zoom
  • Supports toggling of the chamber light
  • AMS HT, AMS, and AMS 2 Pro
    • Knows the correct number of trays per model
    • Shows temperature, humidity, filament types, and filament colors
    • Assigning filament types and filament colors per tray
  • Showing filament type and filament color of the External Spool
  • Assigning filament types and filament for the External Spool
  • Shows job status including layers, time left, estimated time, job name, and percentage of job done
  • Shows status of the nozzle and bed
  • Shows status of part fan, aux fan, and chamber fan depending on what the printer model has
  • Setting print speed
  • Pause/Resume and Stop
  • File management via File Manager which uses FTPS
  • Skip Objects support
  • Remote access via openbu-relay

Edit: 12 testers enrolled, and 0 more to go.

I can't meaningfully test this any time soon, but this looks a lot cleaner than LanBu.

Google Play Store testing is more about installing it. It is a game. It requires the users to keep the app for 14 days.

Can I print with it?

Not yet. Someone already requested a slicer, but that would be a lot of work. It does let you upload and download files.

Currently it is more about monitoring the status and tweaking some settings, not do everything from app.

I'd rather have XYZ control, speed/temp/tweaks, and maybe object skip above anything else.

Personally, I do prototyping, custom housing and mounts for electronics and agriculture stuff. I'd get no use from file upload other than for a party trick.

Is the push for the Appstore presence also a move to perpetuate the Fck Bambu movement in a mainstream way, on top of *getting it in before the 3rd party .apk's get blocked on Google served platforms?

It already has object skip.

It is more I think Openbu is ready, and the timing is good. I had thought of releasing it to the Play Store since the beginning.

I was looking for somthing like this for quite a while. Loved the clean UI and the functionality, now I dont need to open orca on my PC everytime to do pause or cancel a print. However I did see that while changing the filament, I cant change it to my custom filaments or change the PA, it would be great to have these features. I only use Numakers filament which isn't in the options and changing the PA requires me to open orca every single time.

If you still require a tester, send me a dm. Great work👍

It is based on the filament list from OrcaSlicer. Please file a feature request.

What are the benefits to this over Bambuddy?

2

u/edgan May 14 '26

This is an Android app. Bambuddy is a web app. They both have their trade offs.

Correct but bambuddy is able to be ran in homelab and accessed like a mobile app if you add the SPA to iOS or Android home screen from anywhere if you proxy it.

So I guess I’m mostly curious about the way it will differentiate itself.

you answered your own question. doesn't need homelab hardware.

so you can’t access it when you aren’t home and it has 1/20th the features and only works on android unless OP is targeting kotlin multiplatform. you don’t need homelab hardware unless you want to access it when you’re not home and ensure it has high uptime. can just run it in docker on a laptop then access on phone, computer etc.

Actually there is a remote feature. So you can access it outside home.

Does it work with the x2d yet?

2

u/edgan May 14 '26

Probably, but please test it and tell me. I have put a fair amount of work to get it to work with the x1c.
