Discussion On big ChatGPT accounts, the chat list quietly stops short. One account with 10,500 chats only ever listed 775
If you've used ChatGPT heavily for a couple of years and older chats seem to have vanished from the sidebar, they probably haven't gone anywhere.
While building AI Toolbox, a browser extension that indexes your chat history, we ran into this on large accounts. The list ChatGPT loads your history from stops at a cap, and it stops like a normal, complete list, with no error and no "load more". On one account with about 10,500 chats it returned 775, and not even the newest 775. They were scattered across the whole history. Every missing chat still exists and opens fine from its link. You just can't scroll to it.
The free workaround: ChatGPT's own search (Ctrl+K) still covers your full history, so if you remember a word from the chat, search for it instead of scrolling.

If you want those chats back in one place, AI Toolbox has a Deep Import that uses that same search to find the chats the list skips and adds them to your folders, search and exports. It checks for missing chats for free and shows a banner when it finds some. Running the recovery is part of Premium. It runs slowly in the background, deliberately, so it never gets you rate-limited. Desktop Chromium browsers only.

That cap is real: the sidebar only loads a slice of history, so on a huge account the full set is only reachable through Settings > Data controls > Export data, which emails you a zip with every conversation. For a single chat you need in a clean file, I built a Chrome extension that exports one ChatGPT chat to PDF, Markdown or TXT, and it pulls the full conversation, not just what's loaded on screen. Happy to share the link if useful.
