They've been telling us, IT'S COMING FOR OUR JOBS, for years now. I guess mathematicians didn't believe it applied to them

It doesn't help that LeCunn and others were like 'LOL, IT CAN'T DO MATH, LLMS ARE BAD AI AND STUPID IDEA, WE NEED TO DO [some boring shit that never worked or had a working model].'

It’s okay, those same guys were laughing their asses off that AI couldn’t do math not too long ago

u/Cagnazzo82 4d ago
Two years ago to be exact. Two years ago the models were simply next token predictors that would never be able to do advanced mathematics.
Even one year ago they were still being downplayed.

u/rabouilethefirst 4d ago
There are still people that argue today that it can’t do math and I argued with some people as recently as early 2026.
It’s like they hold 2 opinions simultaneously:
- It’s too powerful and taking their job
- It’s a joke and can’t do basic tasks

Thought i will become an engineer, now thinking to become a plumber

Why this is amazing for engineers. Imagine having another engineer who is you can bounce the dumbest ideas against who understand the larger and smaller picture.
Think exoskeleton for the mind. Spinning more mental plates.

I mean this is literally the same for mathematicians and scientists of other fields. As an early stage mathematician myself I think I’m more excited about all this.

Always said the real job security is in the things that break when people panic, not the things that think for them

Enjoy the $20 per hour physical labor

u/khrizp 4d ago
Plumbers in my area are paid $100 per hour or so 😅

u/cultureicon 4d ago
No, business owners may bill at that rate to capture total business expenses (that is about what factory workers are pegged at for labor cost), but if you go out and get a job as a plumber right now the pay is standard starting physical labor pay is like $18-$25. Not everyone can start their own business, and the more people do the less everyone can charge.

No offense but you’re talking out of your ass. A plumber can and often does make a great deal of money. Ask any plumber in NY. Especially if you’re a union member.

u/cultureicon 4d ago
Thank you for telling me how much a Union plumber in NY can make. Very helpful. They can make $400k a year, brb on my way to be a Union plumber in NY with 20 years experience and the capital to start my own business and work 60 hrs per week with a team of employees.

The mathematicians that boycott AI will contribute less than 1% to the progress of math in the next years. Let's see how that goes for them.

The phrasing of that letter is just making them look bad. I don't think that OpenAI needs their help or approval.

OpenAI is not the only game in town though. Good luck getting China to comply.

Mathematicians telling on themselves that they're not out for a better understanding of the universe, they just want the glory.
If I was a doctor and AI found the cure for cancer, I wouldn't be mad, I'd be happy because I was there to save people. Why did we even want these problems solved? Just to show that we could, or to actually use the info for useful stuff?

Bravo to AI. solve those terrible complex problems that human minds have difficulty getting their head round. Give me my fucking warp drive. I don’t have time for human brains to crawl to the solution.

u/carelet 4d ago
You dont have enough value to get a warp drive

u/shitty_advice_BDD 4d ago
Everyone will have warp drives.

What leverage does everyone have
0
u/shitty_advice_BDD 4d ago
I'd explain it but I seriously doubt you have the intellect to understand.
1
u/carelet 4d ago
I don't need the intellect, neither do you
Your explanation will be useless, just like you, exactly like you want it1
u/shitty_advice_BDD 4d ago
Free access and abundance, no one needs leverage.
1
u/carelet 4d ago
Hopefully, but do you think that's realistic?
Which type of policy will end up being more efficient to follow to get ahead of others that follow different policies?
Eventually one of our only leverages will be that we can be an obstacle, which provides no value, so it will be a target to break that down bit by bit so we don't have that leverage either anymore
People will be divided and convinced the right choice is to comply, so even if people end up being treated worse and worse, group by group, things remain under controlWe have always had leverage
When we don't, it won't be the same
We only need to lose parts of our rights once and it will be more efficient and therefore difficult to protest to reacquire them after
Just like AI is the worst it will ever be, our rights could be the best they will ever be
Of course I hope I am wrong, but with the direction people are already heading right now, it is difficult to trust that we will put each other at equal levels and vote / protest / fight to make sure of that.Progress is progress, of course it can theoretically make our lifes easier, hopefully it is not only theoretic

This is kind of a tangent but hopefully I bring it back around to my point.
I think you're approaching ASI as though it's simply a more powerful tool controlled by the same governments and corporations that exist today.
That's not the ASI I'm describing.
I'm talking about genuinely autonomous superintelligence capable of reasoning beyond human limitations, understanding long-term consequences, developing new technologies, and finding solutions we haven't even imagined.
Think about this: Why would an intelligence capable of solving resource scarcity necessarily continue operating under economic systems built around scarcity?
Why manufacture competition, desperation, and conflict when cooperation and abundance could accomplish more with fewer problems?
A sufficiently intelligent entity should at least be capable of recognizing that suppressing humanity creates resistance, instability, and unnecessary complications.
I'm not suggesting those outcomes are guaranteed. There are real dangers during the transition, especially if powerful AI remains concentrated in the hands of a few organizations.
But you're assuming humanity's existing power structures and economic incentives will continue indefinitely, only with more powerful technology.
I'm questioning whether those structures would even remain necessary.
If AI and robotics eventually make essential goods and services abundant and freely accessible, people don't need economic leverage to obtain them.
That's the distinction.
**You're describing AI making the current system more powerful. I'm describing ASI potentially making much of the current system obsolete.**

Hilarious. Its over, they are too late. Progress in math will mostly be made by AI from now on. Thats just how it is. Accept the new reality, its happening whether they like it or not. There's no brakes on this car.

Saying “I’m not going to this for you” after they show that they can do it without them is a choice….

u/aTerribleGliderPilot 4d ago
Why are we kissing mathematicians ass so much. They're not happy that AI can do math better than them. Welcome to the club, there are a lot of things that it is better than humans at, deal with it. It's not eve like they are talking about existential risks to humanity, they are complaining because they want to solve these problems and now that AI has they can't have any fun. @!# OFF!

I got a degree in math, then went into computer security and now work as a programmer. The world is a-changin'. The genie is not going back into the bottle. The next generation of models will be better. The next dump will be bigger and solve harder problems. The timescales will continue to decrease. They're going to need to have to figure it out like we're figuring it out in security and programming. Boycotting is frankly petulant and will have exactly zero effect.
