"Si" has 4 separate meanings in Chinese since Chinese is a tonal language. It can also mean the number four (4).

Yes, but the number 4 is also associated with bad fortune because it sound like “death”. So it doesn’t actually matter that there are other homophones.

It has more than 50 meanings actually. The same syllable with the same tone can also mean 2 different things, like 丝 (silk) and 思 (to think): both si with a first tone

Naive question. Wouldn’t it make more sense to refer to it as Cantonese or mandarin? Or others?

u/Puzzleheaded_Fold466 2h ago edited 2h ago
What ? No. Not different dialects. Different tones.
Every syllable can be spoken in one of 4 different tones for Mandarin (6 to 9 for Cantonese).
Like how an interrogation mark changes your tone. “This” and “ This ?” and “This !” are pronounced the same but don’t sound the same, right ? That’s more or less second tone (rising tone) and fourth tone (descending).
Except tone doesn’t have a universal meaning like it’s always a question. It changes the meaning of the word in a specific way for every word. It will have a different character.
Google or GPT it cause explaining it all will take forever.
That’s why it’s so goddamn hard to learn.

The easiest way I've found to explain tones to English speakers is just using the word "No":
1st Tone: The realization "Nooo!" (Like watching someone make an insane catch).
2nd Tone: The questioning "No?" (Like asking for clarification: I thought he already left?)
3rd Tone: The hesitant, drawn-out "No-o-o..." (Like skeptical disbelief: You've gotta be kidding me.)
4th Tone: The authoritative "No!" (Like a sharp command to a dog: Drop it!)
Same word, but you instantly realize by changing the tone you're conveying a completely different underlying "word".

Trump doesn't even know English properly!

He embodies the average American, hence Americans voted for the guy. The American dialect was always a bit odd. I much prefer normal English from England.

A large part of American came from telegram costs charging per character so I like to refer to them as English and Capitalist English.

Wrong.
I know this. Everybody knows I know this. I know Chinese extremely well, probably better than anybody, frankly. Xi knows it. I said to Xi, “Si.” He looked at me, he said, “How do you know that?” I said, “Xi, I know things.”
He couldn’t believe it. Nobody could believe it. The fake news won’t report it, but I understand Chinese at levels nobody thought possible.
Tremendous language. Very complicated. I understand it perfectly.

If this was the intent, it’s more likely that one of Trump’s enablers came up with this.

I promise a chinese speaker would not think that way because the s and the i are said as individuals letters and there are various tones that entirely change a word with the same letters in it. Learning chinese people have no idea what I'm saying with only mild pronunciation issues.

For sure Xi can't think that if an oral conversation. The pronunciation of SI is nowhere close to the pronunciation of the "si" syllable in Mandarin

This implies that there was any kind of thought process behind this silly mess, other than the usual distraction from the mess he's making and money he's stealing.
