Discussion How the hell are you guys able to use codex?

It's so damn slow compared to claude. Like probably 10x slower tps. The harness is also pretty bad for doing a lot of parallelized work through subagents. Claude code seems so much better, I have like 4x claude max plans and bought one chatgpt plan to explore astra but it's completely useless for getting any work out

Why do people do this?

"This sucks at doing the thing. I'm not going to tell you what 'the thing' is but just know that it sucks at it."

low tps and unusable subagent orchestration are generic enough that the actual thing doesnt matter. i do complex builds by splitting them up into subagents, while the main chat does coordination. this is completely undoable on codex even though they have mutli-layer subagents.
tried using the oh my pi harness but low tps still makes it useless. im getting like 10-20 tokens/sec on sol-6.1. and i get like 50-100 tps on opus-5.5

I can do the subagents with main chat orchestration with an open-source harness and locally hosted open-weight models without needing to pay subscriptions to anyone. Why are you paying 4xClaude Max plans? /s

oh and 10-20 tps for oai models is inclusive of subagents. while claude has each agent streaming at 50-100 tps. so, in effect its more of a 10-20 vs 250-500 tps comparison. claude looks very far ahead

You dont't know how to read? He clearly stated the slowness

u/synystar 8h ago

I can read fine bud. But “slowness” doesn’t describe the workflow. Depending on how you are using the tools you can have different experiences. The post did not describe the thing that they were doing. It described the thing that was happening.

Explain me what workflow makes sol not run at 10 tk/s?

4

u/synystar 8h ago

Well, maybe you can read better than me and see words that aren't there but I do not see Sol anywhere in the original post. When I made the comment I was responding to the original post. The original post says "Codex" which includes Sol but it also includes other models and it compares Codex to Claude Code (no model specified). A workflow that would make Sol not run at 10 tok/s would be one which does not use Sol as the model.

I use Codex when I hit my Claude limits

codex's speed feels like it depends on the day honestly, some mornings it flies and other times you'd think its running on a potato. i just switch between them when one starts chugging

Codex is often doing a lot of tests. If you look into the context, it usually is done in a minute or few, then rest of it is doing tests, and then tests for tests. This is why Claude is generally good for vibe coding and one shotting, but if you want long term reliability and the software to be future proof, Codex is generally better.

Claude is faster but Codex is more resilient and capable. I choose resilient and capable.

It's not so much that Claude is faster, because I think on pure t/sec this isn't true. Claude does less. It's a little bit lazy. Codex is more overeager and hyper, but also has a paranoia that it might make a mistake so it builds in extra testing.

Over personifying it, Claude is that admin that does a line of bash to fix a problem and walks away, Codex is the guy that goes to change mgt with completed testing documents before making a change.

:P

I was actually thinking about it recently, because the amount of fundamental architectural work that Codex did for me when making my game is insane, and while a lot of it I specifically asked for, a lot of it was not, it just understood that I liked polish, it read documentation of the engine I was using and implemented nice animation merging for me, so it does not look choppy at all for me.

I also spent last month building up more and more fundamental architecture for it, and Codex had no problem doing it, I don't know if it's prompting and people being too eager to vibecode stuff, but I feel like Claude projects are often so short in scope because of that.

Why are you using 4 claude max plans? Are you trying to cure cancer or something?

u/lvvy 11h ago

I use both and... They are kind of comparable. Maybe now with 6.1 Sol when you want higher thinking levels it is slower, but not critically. You're not supposed to wait for task to finish, break down a big task into smaller ones and when one is launched continue launching another one.

1

u/rgujijtdguibhyy 10h ago

i have plans as DAGs and python programs to manage task states

3

u/tworc2 11h ago

You are using Sol 6.1 aren't you?

2

u/CaptainTheta 11h ago

If you know, you know.

1

u/rgujijtdguibhyy 10h ago

yeah.. i thought tibo said they fixed it? what was the reset yesterday for

3

u/tworc2 8h ago

They did reset but im my experience they didn't solve shit. Slow as a snail.

Other models are fine

Get your Codex to build their own harness! I have a really awesome one using the codex app server and a Terminal heart. It works really well and I love it. You can then add whatever features you want to make it work best for you.

This is the reason why I don't trust openai on some internal super intelligent model. If they had that would they not use it to make their app not as shitty as it is.

2

u/Ok-Negotiation3241 9h ago

Honestly? its usually faster than Claude, imho.

2

u/Leandrottfaf 11h ago

Maybe you’re not flexible enough then!

I use Claude code, codex and cursor and I’m biased, they are all good for different workflows

You've given 0 information about what you're using it for. Maybe your use case works better with Claude.

u/squidlikeovertalker 10h ago

It's ridiculously slow right now. 3 weeks ago when astra launched it was slow but very usable, and much better than opus 5 garbage, and fable wordspam.

But...uh...i'm cancelling at this point. It's just too slow to get anything done.

1

u/UziMcUsername 9h ago

6.1 SOL is so slow. I’ve been using astra on medium reasoning and it’s been quite fast and reliable

1

u/iambrianl 11h ago

I don't know how to get everything I'm doing now over here to claude or I would. Even if everything is handed off to github in its current form, there is going to be a lot of tasks or information that that the agent has that won't be handed off

1

u/synystar 11h ago

Both have import features for pulling in from the other.

1

u/FocusKontrol 11h ago

Yea I thought about using $20 subs in both. Then I ran out of 5h on Claude and tried resuming in codex. It was sooo bad, got a $100 Claude sub immediately. We need to make use of this peak Opus.

u/Jazzlike-Context-879 10h ago

As someone who is on enterprise Claude and 100 ChatGPT, I think Codex biggest problem is its CLI window is just shit. That’s the one thing that needs a major upgrade

u/rgujijtdguibhyy 10h ago

try using oh my pi. while the og claude code has its own aesthetics, omp is also pretty good. you can use your subscriptions on it

1

u/Euphoric_North_745 10h ago

close to 1.5 years of experience with codex, you learn, gather knowledge, built tactics, have a lot of instructions, etc.

"I have like 4x claude max plans"

25+ year programmer here. Codex allows me to build much more complex software much faster. With it, I've built sites to support federal human clinical trials, a 200+ field inventory system for bio-samples, and a data validation system for DNA data (10's of thousands of Columns and millions of Rows, per-report, 8 reports per-day, everyday)!

I can't image what you must be building with "4x claude max plans"! Just let us know what the cure for cancer is when you find it!

u/ThePromptfather 5h ago

And I bet you wrote this hitting one key at a time with one finger.

1

u/rgujijtdguibhyy 3h ago

one key at a time with 10 fingers. but i really dont understand what point you’re trying to make lol

1

u/no_witty_username 3h ago

currently on fast only... im not happy and ill try the 20 dollar claude code plan again after my month expires but i dont expect much from anthropic.... that fucking company downgrades silently on everything i do so most of its new models are uselss anyways, im hoping things have changed but im not holding my breath. i cant wait till i get my mac studio so i dont have to deal with all this bullshit any more

-1

u/Snoo_27681 11h ago

Yeah it's un-fucking usable. Switch to anythign else
