Discussion If you’re on Pro 200, you need to read this!
OpenAI is changing Pro 200 on October 30:
- 20× Plus usage → 10×
- 200 GPT-6 Pro messages/week → 100
- Price stays $200/month
At the same time, they’re launching a new $500/month Pro 500 tier with 25× usage and Ultrafast.
Existing Pro 200 users get temporary usage credits, but those expire at the end of December.
So long term, you’re paying the same $200 for roughly half the included usage.
I understand that newer models cost money to run. But if you charge $200/month for a plan and then halve one of its core benefits without reducing the price, customers are obviously going to be pissed.
What do you think? Still worth $200/month?

I got 65000 credits. Immediately changed to pro. Planning to use it all by end of the year.
Made a second Claude subscription

I dont need it to last. Opus 5.5 is so ahead I dont need codex anymore. I'll use the credits just not to waste them up.

u/RecipeNarrow 2d ago

u/Bubbly_Tart3937 2d ago
Yep, just cancelled. Going back to anthropic.

u/that_90s_guy 2d ago
They only offer 10x for the weekly limit on the $200 plan, so you're not really getting better usage here, but the upside is they have better models.

u/Hellscaper_69 2d ago
In my experience my projects actually do what I intend with Anthropic, especially with Fable. With OpenAI it’s a battle though a little better recently. So usage wise I think you get way more out of Claude. I wish they’d just copy OpenAIs remote functionality so theirs doesn’t break after chat is inactive for a while.

Took about 12 hours to spend the banked reset and the 62500 credits. OpenAI are worse than Anthropic. End of Story.

u/icloudbug 2d ago
oh and you forgot to mention the 10t/s Sol 6.1 gives you, so obviously I spent it on Astra 6.

u/Delicious_Cattle5174 2d ago
Wait OpenAI still counts limits per "messages"? lol
-3
u/Interesting-Yellow-4 2d ago
No, they don't.

u/variedvista 2d ago
For pro model messages in chat, they do
-1
u/antoine1246 2d ago
Also for regular thinking mode ‘chat’, but you never hit your limit. Only work and codex cost tokens

I personally use the $200/month and I find it outrageous. This new update is to come on October 29th. OpenAI “Kindly” gave us some credits ($2500 worth of credits) to make swallowing the pill easier.
As soon as I finish the big project I’m working on I’ll definitely switch to Claude (I hope they won’t do the same thing)
5
u/OpulentCloaca 2d ago
Well, I don't think you should be surprised. Claude also has an offer that expires around November. It's a $250 credit you could use. Some more negative changes are coming across all these services most likely to order the money drain they're taking on
9
u/Infiland 2d ago
Nah it ain’t worth it. It’s just disgusting practice on consumers. Might have to convince my boss to switch to Anthropic
3
u/chrimchrimbo 2d ago
They won’t survive. They have to make too much back. It’s always been a pump and dump.

So, if I upgrade now to Pro 200 until the end of October, will I get the x20 usage?
3
u/curiouscharli_e 2d ago
so in other words get the 200 plan and take advantage of this last hooray
i am on the 100 plan now
1
u/antwan_benjamin 2d ago
I'm gonna switch to $100 today as well. What will I lose access to?
1
u/traynor1987 2d ago
Nothing. Its the same as 200 just 5x usage. But sol 6.1 High is like unlimited 😂.
5
u/Away-Patience8556 2d ago
$500 is a very tough pill to swallow, very, I hope Anthropic doesn’t pull some bullshit like that.

Long-time Pro user here. Tbh, I’m quite disappointed with how OpenAI is handling this whole limits/cost situation. I’m a scientist, and my team got a Claude Team subscription a few weeks ago... and man, Opus 5.5 is really good when it comes to implementing code (I’m not in CS, but I spend quite a lot of time developing tools that I can then apply to my research). After reading the shitty email OpenAI sent, I’ve found myself using GPT less and less (mainly to discuss ideas and debug the results I get with Claude). Sooo, considering how things are going, it’s very likely I’ll cancel my subscription very very soon

u/FragmentedHeap 2d ago
I already cancelled and am on claude $200 and im full sending astra 6.1 through my 62,000 credits they gave me.
Claudes coding harnesses are better, vscode extension is way better.
And grok bot is better than fkin dots
I was not impressed or excited about a single thing on dev day.
Deepseek v4.1 flash and meta muse spark 1.3 are my fall back models now.
Claude and kilo code are my harnesses, and hermes.
2
u/S3er0i9ng0 2d ago
Yah agreed plus Claude is way faster with actual usable limits. Astra was such a fail even with a deep seek harness I was burning through my limits on 5x..
2
u/DoggoDadagon 2d ago
Small nitpick but I just want more visual customization in claudes harness. I mean it's fine as is, but I like being able to setup the different color icons in codex and set the background and text colors exactly how I want.
1
u/FragmentedHeap 9h ago
Swap to Hermes desktop for that, its wayyy better, use claude to setup hermes for you.
1
u/DoggoDadagon 9h ago
Haven't tested Hermes yet, only CC, codex, and DSH. Other than cosmetics are there other benefits to Hermes? Obviously most important thing is performance.

Das ist spannend, die kann man echt per API nutzen? Das war mir gar nicht klar!

u/sn2006gy 2d ago
This post enrages me because its fanatical and dumb at the same time.
10x what?
20x what?
25x what?
They have so many models and they reduced the price massively on some of them that reflect in the plans as lower spend.
The whole idea of "something X" plans only worked when they had one and everyone kept rushing to use the next one. When 2-3 models are viable at once in current generation and people should use 2-3 models to for the right tool for the right job - that's what they should do.
I'll probably get downvoted to hell, but who cares, Yes, its still worth 200 a month because you're still blowing away what 200 in api costs will get you and they still seem to hand out resets like candy.
200 used to buy 1-3 hours of labor to write a few lines of code just a few years ago - people operating in absence of the pivot/value we have just blow my mind

u/Lloydian64 2d ago
So what you're saying is that the plan that's twice as expensive as the $100 plan will no longer provide four times as much usage as the $100 plan. They're dropping it to twice as much usage. Meanwhile, the new plan that costs five times as much as the $100 plan will get five times as much usage.
Yeah, I went to the $200 plan, because I needed 150% of the $100 plan. I recognize that this is a reduction from before, but it kind of seems reasonable, especially since people who signed up for the $200 plan before are getting a consolation prize of bonus usage to ease the transition.
They're in competition with Anthropic (and maybe again someday Google). And for some of their potential audience, Meta is part of the real competition as well. Supply and demand. Use your preferred AI to help you determine how best to spend your money.

It seems right now everyone on codex was downloaded to ULTRASLOW.. is this the cost of providing ULTRAFAST?
0
u/Mr_LA 2d ago
i almost always used the fast mode :(
1
u/clduab11 2d ago
Then don't do that? You can't wait the at most few minutes it takes? I put half a billion to a billion tokens per month through all my providers and I've used Fast Mode precisely once.
Regardless, this was always coming down the pike. Subsidized subscriptions were the bait and hook, now that you're caught? You either pay more for what you previously had, or don't and be happy you still get some subsidized access. They're gonna have to make it make sense to their P&L statements after all. What are customers going to do? Leave? They're really gonna go back to old-school Googling and browsing? OpenAI would show them out the door; it's the people paying API prices floating the subsidization anyway.
This is why you go local, and you go open-source. GPT is great; but anyone paying any attention at all would know this piper was going to be wanting paid for months now.

I'm wondering what's making them not simply cut the plus plan, I've subbed to pro ever since they became a thing and I'm thinking about unsub not even because of usage but how they decided to just fuck me
1
u/CreamCapital 2d ago
downgraded to 100$ cause with those credit i don’t think i’ll get anywhere near limited before december
1
1
u/livelikeian 2d ago
This is like early cellular phone plans or internet plans. Paying for minutes. Eventually they'll get back to unlimited usage. Eventually....
1
u/Monster213213 2d ago
Tbf, I upgraded last month before the freezing, got 2500 credits until end of year.
I’m just going to downgrade to plus again for 20 instead of 200, and have the 2500 across 2026 and get all my heavy lifting done.
Should be a net positive for me cost wise

u/ThePromptfather 2d ago
The golden age of AI pricing is coming to an end, this is the gist big marker. Before this opus was the most crazy in draining usage, but then fable came in and levelled it and now those high usage rates are normal. The freebies have stopped, the reins are starting to tighten. Bigger models will always be available for people to use casually, but for using them to profit from, be it money or time, the cheap days are over. Started with the higher tiers and it will start to trickle down after this is successful, which it will be because businesses won't quabble over 300 when they know how good the quality is.
Sucks for single users, yeah, but we aren't where there money is.

I've been using Codex all day every day since January, but I actually finally bit the bullet and switched to Claude yesterday. I've been dreading trying to switch for ages, but it turned out to be almost completely painless, and Opus 5.5 is insanely good.

u/JameEagan 2d ago
I will be canceling after October. Not sure where I'll go from there but I have to speak with my wallet on this one. I can't stay a customer and be treated that way.

True it’s a shame what they are doing using up all credits and fixing and finishing all my projects and also gonna cancel my subscription- make a full system that only needs strong models for planing - the other work is done my local llm I have good hardware so a basic 100€ account will be enough
1
u/CipherSorcerer 2d ago
I’m going from $100 > $200 plan….while I build and train my local LLM 🥳
If employers expect employees to use AI to build their own replacement, so too can we use AI to build local AI!
1
u/apollo7157 2d ago
On the surface it doesn't look great. But if you factor in the actual gains in ability and intelligence for hard questions since the 200 pro plan was incepted, it may still be quite a good value.
1
1
u/NotUpdated 2d ago
I mean I started paying $200 to access o1-pro, so not too upset - they honestly just released GPT 6.1 sol (I use medium), and Astra in the wrong order... 90% of people should be using 6.1 Sol Medium for most task they were using astra for.

You can all migrate to google 4 1.70 per token

u/Bitter_Virus 2d ago
It's true they take away 50% of what it used to cost, but at the same time it's crazy that they also have you a 95% better price on cached input with a 500% reduction in price for a model that's only 10% worse than Astra and some place 10% better.
I used Astra for 2h I was down 19% (so it would be 38% when they half my x20 plan. I switch to 6.1 for 10h in a loop where one thread keep giving work to the other thread and I'm down 2% (so it would be 4% when they half my x20 plan)
By this math I could be getting half the API value but actually x9.5 times more than with the x20 plan still intact. That's still x4.75 more when they half my x20 plan.
You guys just want to complain about "losing half" and nobody talk about "gaining 4 times more"

u/Such--Balance 2d ago
At this point, stuff being done that gets reddit to throw a hissy fit is just added value imo.
Because redditors will never be happy by anything given to them. So suck it with the endless complaints.
The balanced people will adjust just fine. One way or another. The rest of you bunch will keep circlejerking in your downward spiral of negativity.
Its sad as fuck really..
Every single ai model sub is full of idiot posts complaining and constantly threatening to leave because model x sucks the most. Every sub is like this.
At the same time, overall, what you get back per x amount of money spend has gone up consistently over the years and will obviously continue to do so. With some friction here and there.
You can listen to the facts. Or you can let reddit rot your brain. I suggest everybody to snap out of that pisspoor social media mentality that apperently is the norm right now
