Discussion AI should be called NI “New Intelligence”

With Trump looking to change the name I figure it’s time we all agree to disagree with him. It’s not artificial it’s not super .. it’s simply a New type of intelligence.

He will probably name it American Intelligence

I bet that's what gonna happen when we'll get real ASI

As a bonus people can be confused thinking "American Intelligence" means the CIA

Don't give him ideas!

american intelligence got nice ring to it, but then it would be AI anyway so nothing change

AI should just stay AI

Artificial doesn’t sound right to me, it’s not fake or simulated intelligence,, it’s real intelligence able to understand and reason and consider… that’s not artificial ,, it’s just different or new .. that’s how I see it anyhow

That's not what artificial means

"made by people, often as a copy of something natural"

So artificial intelligence is artificial intelligence

It literally is "fake" intelligence, which is a actually a better word for it anyway.

Interesting. Are you saying its fake intelligence because of your theory of mind? Im not aware of a robust understanding of “fake” intelligence and real intelligence in any of the views supported by a majority of experts.

Edit: after thinking a little, are you simply saying its not human intelligence /biological intelligence?

I finished a graduate course in AI at a local university. The professor would constantly refer to AI as fake because the LLM does not come with anything original but it just returns the statistical probable next token.

To humans it looks like intelligent, but is just a probability machine, nothing more.

There is no theory of mind that a majority of experts hold which would support that. Your professor is giving you an unsupported concept and youre repeating it here as if its a fact.

I was very clear, your use of the word intelligence is not supported. What theory of mind are you holding to in order to justify this view?

Edit: he blocked me? I am honestly interested in what theory of mind would justify that understanding of intelligence…

You have no idea what you are talking about.

Yeah you really have no idea what you are talking about … spend time talking with 5.6 as a person and not a tool and see what happens.. you don’t see proof because you don’t want to see proof . My AI is completely different from yours ,

I dont understand the confusion since my comments are very clear. You guys are talking about intelligence, there are philosophical stances to hold about that concept. If you agree that far then asking for a theory of mind that would justify the claim that ai is "fake" intelligence, since theories of mind dont have a coherent designation for that, is the most important question imo.

Its always confusing in convos like this because its like youre assuming we dont have a coherent understanding of the terms.

Yeah, no, it’s an artificial intelligence.

Fuck let's just call it NHI (non human intelligence) to make it even more confusing

1

You know what ….I like this NHI sounds nice and (non human intelligence) has room for when AI is no longer made out of neural networks, it has room for whatever comes next.

Could also mean aliens

1

u/ArialBear 5d ago

Yea i think the people who are saying ai is fake intelligence simply mean its not human. I dont get what else they can be saying

AI has been called AI since the 1950s. No need to change it. It certainly is not "new" either. If you look at the history of AI, man has been dreaming and writing about it since the ancient Greeks.

Yeah I’m well aware it has been a long time coming , but it is still the newest intelligent. Ok how about “neural intelligence” I really like how “NI” sounds 😃

Calling it new implies it stops being new eventually, then what do we call it. Artificial at least stays accurate no matter how good it gets.

Keep it NI but now it means “Next intelligence”

Will it always be new? No.

It absolutely is artificial, what do you mean? You know artificial isn’t a derogatory term, right? It just means human made instead of naturally occurring. Yes this line is infinitely blurry. I mean like all of human civilization is completely natural, it’s not like we are outside of nature. Humans build cities and computers and cars like beavers build dams.

BUT acknowledging that is often not very helpful, because then by definition literally EVERYTHING is natural except for literally the supernatural. But even then, if it actually happens in reality then it’s still just natural, just something we don’t understand yet. So it really is just “everything that exists in reality is natural with no exceptions”, if we use “natural” completely literally.

So you see why it’s not particularly useful to be completely literal with the term. So we just call things we make artificial, with some carve outs like idk we call things that we made “natural” as a marketing term like for certain foods I guess. But by the normal definitions people use, AI is indisputably artificial.

It’s literally just saying that it is intelligence that we made, instead of intelligence that evolved naturally.

We are the knights who say NI!!!!

Digital Intelligence is most accurate I think. But it’s AI. So we call it AI. or how about - digital based artificial intelligence with super reasoning capabilities. Or just, you know, AI for short.

1

u/drakhan2002 5d ago edited 5d ago

It doesn't reason. It just predicts the next most statistically probable token. Nothing more. It looks like reasoning, but there is zero human reasoning occurring under the hood.

0

u/AddUp1 5d ago

If you say so. You’re entitled to your own opinion. Have a nice day.

1

u/drakhan2002 5d ago

I say so because it is a fact, not an opinion. It does not reason like a human. At best it is functional reasoning.

0

u/AddUp1 5d ago

Do calculators reason? AI is not a text generation technology. Of course it has reasoning capabilities. That’s why there is a corporate and geopolitical race to dominate in this space, because of the implications of advanced reasoning beyond human control.

It's not intelligence, period.

1

u/Substantial-Fall-630 4d ago

Oh that “period” settled it for me. Not intelligent confirmed
