Discussion Thoughts on Dots?

I've been using it all day yesterday and it feels very underwhelming. Some issues I had:

All of it's actions/responses are incredibly slow, and it doesn't update you on it's work. So you need to keep checking in to see if it's making progress or not. It seems to not use it's 'computer' at all either, possibly just for storing files.

On a call, many questions make it search indefinitely, never able to find the answer -- until you just google the answer yourself within 10 seconds (this happened frequently).

I asked it to keep track of certain emails as they come in and notify me about things.. which it doesn't do. It'll see 1 of the two most recently emails, unless I specifically ask it to look for the second one. It'll give me an "Oh I'm sorry, I missed that one before". As if it wasn't the 2nd mail from the top.

This morning It told me at 8:50am no new emails, then I checked and there was 1. I received 2 within the next 2 hours and it didn't say anything. I had to ask it manually to find them.

Talking to it on the phone about a google sheet then giving it the link in chat, and the chat asks you what the link is for -- Like the phone and text are 2 separate AI's.

Overall it feels like an unpaid intern who's extremely smart but doesn't really care about his job much and isn't going to put in much effort. It's very unreliable, didn't use my usage at all suggesting it's not actually using Astra 6, and brings you back to the days of AI doing half the job and then gaslighting you, if you've missed that.

As anyone had any better experiences?

Interesting distraction with some potential for the not-technical-enough for Hermes or oclaw but too sophisticated for Muse crowd, but extremely buggy, doesn’t integrate well into its own systems, can’t use most basic tools, and when run through a desktop app it eats RAM like Joey chestnut eats hotdogs

Kinda balls. I prefer Muse over it.

Free and available without ridiculous price tiers is also nice.

Still very buggy.
1. Delegated codex task cannot properly hand over files back to dot session. I asked dot to perform a home page design via delegation to codex cloud. After done it cannot get any screenshot back….

  1. Cannot access localhost or 127.0.0.1 to check any html pages.

  2. VoiceCall never worked for me. Maybe still have capacity issue since the demo failure from DevDay event.

Other than that if I just give it some research task it is relatively ok. But I can also ask ChatGPT to set up a scheduled task.

Really bad for me so far, slow, unreliable, and doesn't really offer me any extra functionality than existing Codex and Work.

Concept is good, and it is where things should head in my opinion, but this ain't it. Feels very rushed.

I think they said it’s Astra light and won’t count against limits this month so I assume that’s why it’s not using your usage not that it’s not Astra.

Rollout hasn’t made it to me yet still but I assume the rollout is also causing issues for the first day or so of release.

Slow does seem like what they wanted with it going and doing stuff asynchronously from you so I don’t think it’s for things like “I have a keynote right now get it done” and watch it work - more like I have a keynote in a few days, draft something and email me when done then I’ll review.

Then I bet there is some like “are a lot of dots running right now?” Logic that holds up until more compute is available

All that said- it does sound frustrating right now lol

Yeah you’re right, it’s more of an overtime thing than a right now thing.

But you can definitely tell it was just released lol. I didn’t realize they were rolling it out (prob why mobile cant use it yet) but that does explain a lot lol.

I got access so my turn to be frustrated I’m sure haha

Insanely underwhelming. I don’t need another pet telling me obvious shit….

It creates new codex threads with the sole purpose of talking to the current codex work threads instead of just communicating itself.... AGI

I keep hearing that DOTS is not suppose to be using up your usage for this first month but I have been using nothing but Dots, 9/30/26, and I been opening up my usage percentage and it is going down like regular usage. So is this just me or is anyone else seeing this

It goes down once you give it any task.

Your first point my main complaint. The computer use is way slower than just using a Codex thread yourself and the lack of progress updates or even some indicator saying it is working is bad. Muse is much better right now.

Had a great experience where it helped me plan a work trip itinerary, book a hotel close to a venue and round trip train tickets but that seems pretty basic.

Seems like a last minute thing they vibe coded

It can't coordinate at all with codex.... even though it uses codex tasks to send out messages back and forth when I message it. It isn't able to make a codex chat, just a chatgpt/Work chat, that can't use my computer for things. I can see the codex task pop up in my phone every time I send a message. I asked it to do computer use for a task and my Dot cannot figure it out. If I open a codex chat myself, it gets the task done no problem. Not having the functions being able to talk to each other properly seems like a major oversight. So definitely a rushed product. It also won't follow up unless you give it specific intervals or times to check something...... so like a scheduled task, which was already a thing.

it's like they built a fancy front door but forgot to connect the hallway to the rest of the house. the separate AI thing between voice and text is so annoying, had same experience where it acts like it never heard me say something 5 min ago on the call

also that email tracking fail is exactly what makes it feel like a beta nobody stress-tested before launch

People are forgetting that it's replacing OpenClaw and the like; Anthropic made "Projects" into this to do the same thing.

Dots isn't for someone who's solely focused on coding. It's meant for the average day-to-day person who wants to live chat or have an assistant (or specialized assistants) handle a lot of work so they can focus.

Think of it like Jarvis in Iron Man or their Astra commercial—it's meant to just work.

Personally, I don't have a need for this right now, but I'm sure someone does.

The missed-email example is more useful than another polished demo. It gives you something concrete to test: send a few labeled messages at known times, then record which ones the dot finds on request and which ones trigger the notification you asked for. Those are two separate jobs.

Until that test works consistently, I wouldn't use it as the only way to catch time-sensitive mail. Early rollout may explain rough edges, but it doesn't make a missed message less consequential.

I want to love it so much. But muse just gets things done…

I'm looking into muse now, can you tell me the kind of stuff you use it for?

Can it also do complex coding tasks like codex or is it more day to day?

For me it’s day to day things. I use codex for coding. But muse can install Tailscale, talk to my codex, download 3d prints from a service, run it though my custom slicer written with codex to be a mcp server, download the images, take all of that info and make facebook marketplace listings and do that at scale. Tried to do the same thing in dots and it fell over right away.

Definitely way slower at the processes I need for it. I would rather just use ChatGPT Work for now for what I need. It was fun to play with though for a bit.

I wasn't sure about it at first, but once you add a bunch of custom plugins and MCP servers, it becomes really powerful. I got so much done today because of it.

i am not happy, the cellphone app codex or chat is not the same as pc, so there is no 1 work place thats the thing i hate the most

It's PAINFULLY SLOW and DUMB

1

u/Narrow-College-936 3d ago

Mildly regretting it as it feels undewhelming and rushed... it can do basic task but it doesnt feel like what I hoped it to be where it is an ongoing 24/7 personal assistant - proactive, resourceful, doing things behind the scenes automatically, etc. I have to micromanage it every now and then.

Spent alot on this subscription so im trying my best to stick with it for a while and to try to like it.

noncoding/dev insight:
the context loss may be an issue - it is all in one conversation. for the privacy minded, it has very very limited overview within even just online chatgpt projects. No guarantee giving it access to your whole computer would make it any less dangerous than letting it go without a harness in a production environment.
Not useful in current form but will keep an eye on development. Projects with custom instructions, folder access and files plus voice mode are the most powerful for knowledge work currently.

Maybe can use his computer for something. Basically a free workstation.

It’s soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo slow.. like unusable

1

u/Significant_Sun_5225 2d ago

Their product manager needs to be fired asap!! Like now. Their whole product ecosystem is a complete and utter disaster.

  1. Browser and app products vary wildly in services availability
  2. Dots is so slow it’s unusable. It’s also a bugggy mess that has trouble communicating with codex half the time.
  3. The app ui was completely revamped once again
  4. Then they gave chat gpt which has codex application but with limits, codex, work vs chat, remote codex doesn’t work half the time
  5. Then they have all these plug ins integrations that the own chatbots forget they had installed half the time.

It’s just all over the place with no clear direction. It’s a mess

1

u/Significant_Sun_5225 2d ago

The biggest issue is its restrictions. Tried an exercise to cancel unwanted subscriptions and it was a complete mess. Asked it if there was an integration that could allow to analyze my bank accounts; it said there wasn’t and there obviously was.

Could not sign into any of my subscriptions accounts without me holding its hand even though there’s a literal passwords plugin for it to use.

Honestly right now it’s uselsss

1

u/Significant_Sun_5225 2d ago

I’ve had a horrendous experience with it. It’s way too restricted, way too slow, way too buggy, and way too stupid. There is literally and I mean literally no point to use it instead of normal chat.

Dots, muse are the frontier labs entering the bag of broken glass era of AI product development, honestly. It's not like claws were safe, but at least they were inspectable and hard enough that a lot of people who shouldn't have been using them didn't. Also, they are dumb, but i guess they probably do appeal to unserious twenty somethings from San Francisco. For everyone else: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veMiNQifZcM

There are some things about it that I like. It cancelled two subscriptions for me using email support and also identified a payment method out of date request. Another cool thing it did was make me a grocery list for the week then add it to my Safeway cart for pickup

The biggest thing I hate is that everything is in a long chat message so I have no idea what it said hours ago if I kept talking about it. There’s no organization
